I'm not from Missouri but my Grandmother was. "Show me" is a good statement to make when purchasing insurance coverage. Not everything is covered unless a person is willing to pay for it. Insurance will give you compensation but it can't replace lost treasures or works of art.

When mother nature decides to get rough, there isn't anything you can do about it except get in a subterranean enclosure and pray.

In Australia, we would use steel framework on a warehopuse like this. With timber construction, it is no wonder that so many houses and buildings are destroyed by tornadoes. You may want to check out what happened in Darwin (Australia) in the ‘70s
as regards building damage, and construction types, although I think that may have been a cyclone.
Most building construction that I’ve seen in Australia is similar to that in New Zealand, and some would not stand up to the tornadoes that they have in the states.

Yes Clem, we did suffer a lot of damage back in 1974 when Cyclone Tracy hit Darwin. We have learned a lot from that disaster, and our houses and buildings are much better built these days. Above is a picture of the remains of one mans home, but he still is able to add a bit of fun to the disaster. That is a 1971 XY Ford Falcon parked under his house. It looks like it was spared damage?

Reviewing the pix posted by mercman in #11 tells me that the light weight 2x4 trusses with corrugated tin roofing/siding was a very poor design, "built to a budget in lieu of a design", that was predetermined to fail.

As most of the world should be aware California has sustained some horrific fires since early December, 2017. The largest fire to ever hit CA until the most recent fire was right here in Ventura, over 1,100 buildings were lost, over 50% of which were homes and residential units.
I was awoken at 12:15 AM, Dec, 2017 by neighbors beating on my bedroom window informing me that my house was on fire. A large gully, barranca, behind my house that is full of large Eucalyptus trees had caught fire. My wooden fences were on fire and the fire was licking at the garage where my '39 Plym convertible is kept.
The structure was originally built out of wood in the late '70's, however, age, and termites had seriously compromised the building, so I tore it down in the early, mid '90's, reconstructing it with reinforced cement block.
I had disconnected the battery in the Plym for the winter, with the help of several neighbors we pushed the Plym out of the garage into the front yard.
With three garden hoses and bailing water from the swimming pool, we were able to keep the fire way from the house until the fire department showed up.
Had the garage still been built out of wood, there is no doubt in my mind that the garage would have been a path to lead the fire right to the house. As it was the damage to my property was over $28,k.. My insurance covered everything with no questions asked.
I have many friends in the Ventura area that lost everything in the Dec. 2017 fire, in the majority of the situations they were under insured and/or not insured at all.

In my mind I knew that it was just a matter of time before the gully behind my house caught fire, it was just a matter of when and how, to this end, I have kept the trees in my portion of the gully thinned out and/or down to minimize the threat of fire to my property.

Insurance companies are crooks to begin with. Would be nice if the government came down on them.

Sal while I agree 100% Insurers R crooks. However on the bottom feeder list they may be the lowest but the Government ain't much better! If they got involved as with everything their involved with, it'd be an even bigger Cluster -F. Both love to collect & neither like to give back! Mother natures a bitch, insurers do giant CYA's in areas where thing shes involved with are more prevalent i.e., tornado alley. I'm sure the rates against storm damage there are astronomical! I have an ocean block property and my home owner insurer ( they all do) refuses flood & tidal damage. I have to get my flood and water damage insurance from the Gov. & it's twice as much as my home owners on a separate policy. As I said the Gov's help would probably be worse!

If not for the government, who is going to police the insurance companies? People like you should be worrying about getting the government to be able to do a better job on stuff like this, rather than trying to cripple it.
