Default Best way to clean original, wool upohlstery?

I have some original, wool fabric with the cotton batting that came off of some 27 sedan seats. I'm wanting to use it to cover a seat for my roadster. It's really in nice shape but is pretty dirty. Any suggestions on what would be the best way to clean this?

Thanks!!

First, vacuum it real good and then, there are plenty of products out there for shampooing upholstery.
If it's real bad, you might take it to a dry cleaner.

If you've got enough to be able to cut a sample off do it and try washing it by hand in a cold water with some of the gentler laundry soaps like they sell at quilt shops. That'll give you an idea of what it can take.

In reference to Garrison's post: Don't do the whole thing at once. Use a corner or a cut off piece as a test. My idiot cousin just destroyed a rug because he used Oxyclean on it. Instructions? Bugger that!

Thank you for the suggestions and the idea of doing just part at once, that makes a lot of sense. Anyone ever use Woolite on these??

Ford Service Manual says to use gasoline. I did and it took the grease right out. Worked great. Follow up with something that smells pretty if you like.

There are some non-flamable degreasers that may have the same degreasing characteristics as gasoline without being quite so dangerous (flammable, toxic and irritating to skin as gasoline.

No kidding?? Gasoline? I guess that would work well. That sure is a sign of the times!! I might try something else first but might resort to that if that's what Henry suggested!

I'd worry about using gasoline. Ole Henry was probably thinking of spot cleaning and, certainly, not on 85 year old fabric. I think that would be a little too strong.
Testing a sample first, is a great suggestion.
