32 spring bushings

David,Were the nos asbestos ones drilled for cotter pin? I have the tools to install,is there a certain position the square shoulder on the studs should be turned or do the studs turn inside of bushing? thanks

NOS studs are found in both forms, the original 1933 form with long threads with a hole for a cotter pin and the later production/service version with shorter threaded end studs and no cotter pin holes as they were made to be used with Marsden locking nuts. If you are very careful, you can add the holes for cotter pins on the later version.

I do not believe that any great care was taken originally to line up the cotter pin holes on the spring perch and main spring leaf bushing studs. Likely some attention was paid to the initial alignment of the square portion of the studs to facilitate the installation of the figure eight bars linking the bushing studs together, but not to the cotter pin holes. Once installed, the studs inside the bushings can be turned, although I think it best to try and minimize the need to do so.

Here are the 2 information pages on installing shackle pins correctly. The 1st is page 444 from the Ford Service Book illustrating the KR Wilson tool for removing & installing shackles in the earlier cars, of which the '32 is one. It's a little easier than in later cars which require different tool. The 2nd is Kube's post on "Installing Shackle Pins Correctly". The reason you may not have been able to find the post is it goes back to 2009, which could be before the Fordbarn changed hands.

Received no’s bushings from 3rd gen put them in with no hiccups. Had to drill for cotter pins

Was there enough length in the threaded part to drill a 1/8" cotter hole, for a castellated nut, as in the original drilled ones? The undrilled ones are shorter so it seemed to me that a smaller 3/32" cotter hole might be needed to leave enough meat at the end.

It seems to me that some replacement shackle studs came with "marsden" nuts that are self locking and do not require a cotter pin. That may be why no holes for cotter pins. Unless it's for points, to me a cotter pin is an unnecessary evil.
