Default CE Rear End Mounts...Really SLICK Alternative

For all the folks out there with the need to mount a pair of parallel leaf springs on your chassis to replace the stock banjo set-up, here's a really cool alternative to the CE-type mounts that I ran across several years ago, and it just about looks like a factory set-up that could have been. The chassis shown is a '40 pick-up, which is essentially the same as a car. These brackets come from under the front end of a Chevy AD (Advanced Design) pick-up from the years of '48-'54. There are still gazillions of 'em sitting out there behind a tree on the farm, just waiting to offer-up these four brackets for use under your Ford. I have no idea what the spring is that's in use here, but I'd bet it wouldn't be too hard to figure a starting point for a spring. DD

Neat idea! Would the stock gas tank clear?
What’s the eye to eye measurement?

Just my opinion, but I believe you're approaching the eye to eye measurement backwards. Obviously, ROUGH measurements of E to E can be estimated by noting the position of factory holes in the frame rail with relation to the bracket in the picture. Using that criteria, I would then find an available spring of the correct width that comes close to the length estimated, and close to the RATE necessary to comfortably carry the weight of the rear of the car. THAT spring, along with axle center line would determine eye to eye dimension, as well as location of such on frame rail.

It surely looks like mounting the STOCK tank would require some thought. DD

Just a couple of possible issues. The pictured spring length is much shorter than used with the C.E. kit, which will affect ride. Second is the greater outward position of the springs compared to C.E. which can make wheel offset/tire size more challenging. Not knocking the Chevy mounts, just some things to consider, vs the well designed and respected C.E. setup.

In addition to the above, the hangers drop down below the frame so much that it might be difficult to get the rear of a passenger car down to the ride height that someone who would make this mod might want it. Should work great for a commercial, though.

It's an interesting concept, but the draw backs noted by others would deter a lot of people from using those brackets. Modifying the gas tank to clear the rear brackets would be the first problem and the length of the springs for the proper ride height and ride quality would be the second one.

The front bracket and placement looks good. The rear should be just a few inches, maybe six, from the back intersection with the rear cross rail. The springs should be low arched. Picture is of my 40 with a 1956 Chevy rear end. It took me a few trys to get leaves and height right. Ride is good.

THANKS, COOPMAN, that is a slick setup.

FWIW, here's the link to the original install thread with lots of info and pics.

Yes, "mj40's"! I could 're remember that name from a long time back. I'm glad the original thread was posted with all the relevant info. Again, once all the set-up details are worked-out (as with any major mod), this looks like the factory would have done it. Different strokes......! DD

Those hoses look like an accident waiting to happen with so much slack and that pump looks awfully exposed
