Default Fiber timing gear

A friend here wants to replace his fiber timing gear with an aluminum one.Is there a difference with the 59A to the 8BA? Here is a pic of a set for sale here although there is no reference number. He doesn't want to replace the crank gear.

Yes.
The teeth are cut on the opposite helix. 59A pushes the cam towards the block. 8BA pushes the cam forwards towards the timing cover.
For what it is worth French motors use aluminium gears cut the same way as 59A.
As far as I can tell, those gears in the picture are cut like 59A. (Don't take my word on it though).
Mart.

fiber gears wear the crankshaft gear different than the aluminum gear, a new aluminum gear may not be happy with a used crankshaft gear that ran with a fiber gear

Won't these straight cut aluminum gears 'whine'?

I've had 'em on 3 engines and never heard a "whine". As a matter of fact, I don't remember any different sounds at all. Maybe it's the Fenton's and steel packs.

Anyone caring to look closely will see that these are NOT "straight-cut" gears. The helix angle is most definitely visible, especially when looking at the right side of the cam gear.

I have a theory that the aluminium gears bed into the crank gear. The French motor in my truck whined. I realised I had switched the cam gears. I fitted the gear that was originally paired with the crank and it quietened down.

Not a French motor .My friend will change out using the matched set.He was surprised to find the fiber gear when he pulled the cover off.He is learning about flathead Ford V8's.He found that new set advertised on the equivalent of Craigslist here in France for $25.Looks like what H&H sells in their catalog.

Some of the new fiber gears available today (probably coming from offshore souurces) are nowhere near the quality of the original fiber gear used by Ford. I had one fail, somewhere between 1000 to 2000 miles on a rebuilt '35 221ci, 21 stud engine. I replaced that with an aluminum gear that now has over 35k miles on it. I wouldn't consider use anything other than aluminum timing gears now. Luckily, I was able to stock up on enough of these aluminum gears to rebuild as many 21 stud engines that I will ever need.

John, so glad you added your experience here. I too had a "new" fiber gear fail after less than 500 miles and toasted the fresh engine.
My advice to anyone thinking of using a fiber gear? Locate a NOS or NORS gear and stay far away from the new parts.
