Latest question- clutch disk wobble
Recently bought a new 10 inch clutch disk for my ‘46 Mercury. Purchased from well known V8 parts supplier. Put it on my main shaft to check the fit, and it is an extremely sloppy fit. It will wobble or rock maybe a half inch at the outer edge. I tried another old disk and put both disks on two old main drive gears I had… the new disk is much more wobbly on any combination of parts.
I’m concerned this might cause issues. Any experience out there regarding how the disk should fit on the main drive gear??? Thanks, Bruce Williams |

Re: Latest question- clutch disk wobble
I at least would like to know which "well known V8 parts supplier" it was. It's nice to know who has sold out to Mammon these days.
There still are quality suppliers out there. We need to help each other to separate the sheep from the goats. Return it for another? Make sure you get a refund. When I bought parts from Carmichel's Auto Parts (read : junkyard) in Excelsior, Minnesota in the fifties, I would ask Jim (or sometimes Bruce) if it was any good; they would answer : "If it's no good, bring it back and I'll give you another one just like it." It took me about 5 years for me to realize what they were actually telling me. Last edited by tubman; 11-23-2022 at 08:01 PM. |

Re: Latest question- clutch disk wobble
I was looking to get educated on how snug the disk should be, before approaching the vendor. I’m confident there won’t be a problem doing a return, but I thought I’d get some expert advice on expectations before having a discussion about the return. If you have some specific insights on how it should fit, please respond.
Had a Model A many years ago that took three pulls of the transmission to figure out that the disk was too tight on the main shaft. Wouldn’t release fully and it dragged and made shifting impossible. Being 17 and in a hurry, I just took a grinder to the splines and solved the problem. Thanks Bruce |

Re: Latest question- clutch disk wobble
Hi Bruce. The disc should be tighter than you describe. Usually 1/8-1/4" of play at the outer edge is normal, and I'd say closer to 1/8"in most cases. The amount you have is going to be trouble.

Re: Latest question- clutch disk wobble
I think it is wise Bruce withholds the suppliers name until this is or is not resolved by them. A business cannot check every item that they may have in stock unless they did the manufacture of the item, and that we don't know. Things also can get damaged in transit or on a wharehouse shelf. I'm sure we will hear the outcome.

Re: Latest question- clutch disk wobble
Well I recently went thru the same discovery with a new friction disc for my ‘51 f1 (see my posting titled “severe chatter”. After two reinstallations with same disc, I stumbled upon the loose center hub being way too wobbly after cleaning the splines with a rag. Sent it back to my long time trusted vendor and am about to install a second disc they sent. That hub looks to be a pressed fit and should not wobble excessively. Right?
