Peep mirrors Vs Convex
I thought I'd add peep mirrors to my 36 coupe because of the blind spots.
I bought a convex peep mirror and before installing, just the mirror without the bracket, on the passenger side original hinge pin bracket. Voila! I can now see my back fender and have a great view of traffic behind and along side me. Try a convex mirror before you add peeps and scratch the paint. |

Re: Peep mirrors Vs Convex
Couldn't agree more Tom. I'm using a pair of door hinge pin mirrors with convex on passenger side. Years ago I had a tiny peep mirror on my roadster, was really scary with the top up so fitted 2 decent sized mirrors to w/shield posts.

Re: Peep mirrors Vs Convex
I've been using a convex mirror on the passenger side door hinge mirror on our '39 CS for the 20+ years I've owned it. Also have a convex mirror on the passenger door rearview mirror on our '53 F-100 Panel (talk about a blind spot) Truck. I'll also be installing a convex mirror on the passenger side door hinge mirror on our '39 LZ convertible.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/CONVEX-4-PEE...26fbf7&vxp=mtr I had to buy a #4 metric 7 x 20 screw (Home depot or Lowes) to attach it to the hinge pin arm. Half the price of Mooneyes I'll also post this on the new thread you started. DUH |

Re: Peep mirrors Vs Convex
You can get the "stick on" type of convex mirror at most auto parts stores, just stick it on the existing mirror, it worked for me.

Re: Peep mirrors Vs Convex
All the stick-on convex mirrors I have seen have too much convex and makes it hard to judge distance and lack clarity. I have the type in the post above and believe me, they are sooo much better. They have just enough convex to widen the view a little. I have one on each side of the '38. The body is egg-shaped and nothing short of a west coast mirror will stick out far enough to see directly behind but the interior mirror handles that. These mirrors do an excellent job of opening up that blind spot.

Re: Peep mirrors Vs Convex
If anybody wants the bracket from the mirror I bought it's "free". Just pay the box/postage fee. Say $10

Re: Peep mirrors Vs Convex
I have used the convex type of mirror on the right side mirror of my older vehicles for about twenty years..
I go to a parts store, select the correct size convex mirror for the stock mirror, remove the self stick tape and install the convex mirror over the existing mirror with 'GOOP' or any other clear silicon type of sealant.. I don't worry about the absolute correctness of the magnification.. If I can see daylight between my car fender/body and the other objects, I figure I have room to do what I want. Of course with a little practice the clearance distance is easier to judge. You really have to look close to see the new mirror is glued over the original mirror..

Re: Peep mirrors Vs Convex
Blucar that bracket is pretty neat.
I have swan mirrors on my '40 convertible with a stainless bezel convex glued on the passenger mirror, it made a world of difference. The mirror was useless without it. |

Re: Peep mirrors Vs Convex
Hagan Street Rods, www.haganauto.com, 888-464-2426 has a line of mirrors and brackets called "Fatties Super View Mirrors". I have them on both my cars and they work great. I don't know how they do it, but I can see all three lanes of the Long Island Expressway and the Jersey Turnpike when I'm driving. They have many different sizes and also brackets etc.

Re: Peep mirrors Vs Convex
I have been using convex for years. One thing that I LOVE about them is at night they don't blind you when somebody is tailgating or has ultra bright headlights. Tim

Re: Peep mirrors Vs Convex
Back in the '60s I bought a '40 pickup w/ side mirrors that were the height of the windows by 7+ inches. (the pickup was a daily driver in Milwaukee, so the guy(now seller) needed those for years & years driving in traffic.) If you want useable see-everywhere mirrors and don't care about looks, they are thee mirrors. (easy clamp-on . . . on the door edge. Once you have 'em, you're lost without 'em.
Thank you. |
