Default Model A paint

I cannot purchase Lacquer based paint in New Jersey. I can purchase and use Acrylic Urethane. If I ever enter my car in a MAFCA show will the type of paint matter?

Thank You,
Rich

Can you hop across the state lines and buy it? Or is it outlawed and can't even be sprayed in NJ?

You can buy paint mail order...and in Kalifornia where we can not buy lacquer paint to paint an entire car, you are allowed to buy lacquer to repair a part of a car that has been damaged that has a lacquer paint job. You may have to buy it in quarts but what the heck..it is a way around the law.

It can be purchased by mail/internet order at a reasonable price and they mix model A colors in accordance with the MAFCA Paint Manual.

You need to call, Hibernia Restorations, Hibernia NJ 07842 (973)627-1882 & ask for John Dattoli.

I bought Model A lacquer from them this spring.

You really are better off with a urethane paint. It is modern and depending on how you paint, much easier to take care of long term.

Depending on how many points you want it will be a lot of work. If you work with the single stage paint (BC/CC are too glossy not matter what) you will find it lays out very glossy if you do it right. You can make it look more factory by buffing it some.

It gets tricky if you plan on making the semi flat look of unpolish lacquer as you will have to add some flattener and paint the unpolished surfaces with that.

Marco did this with his car. He use Concept paint.

The short answer is no.

The longer answer is no matter what paint you use it has to match the sheen that the paint had when it left the factory. Some areas were not buffed out so they were a little dull. Firewall, the bottom side of the hood, come to mind right away.

Most folks strive for a REALLY shiny, smooth, highly waxed finish. Then comes along the stuff about TOO SHINY, RUBBED OUT HERE-NOT THERE, SATIN HERE, SEMI-SATIN THERE & the list goes on & on---How STUPID are some of these so called "standards"???---It gets ridiculous!!
I hope the small group of PURISTS will forgive me. Just because some of these things are in the "standards", some feel they're "PRESSURED" into following them.

I'm with you on that Bill. If I were 20 or 30 years younger I'd be into the standards. I like to read about how they did it and it turned out, but I'm afraid I'm getting too old to spend all the time trying to get a Henry award. I'd like to tour the USA before I go. And I'd rather have chrome and lots of shine.

Rich,
Yes you can buy acrylic lacquer in N.J. Here is a link to PPG paint dealers named Colours, located in South Hackensack N.J.and another location in the 609 area code.

Let them know the color, formula etc. or bring a paint chip from the Model A Paint Guide book to the store and they can match it. Here is the link : http://gocolours.com/

Bring money, as it is $150.00 a quart.....Mike
