Help removing spare tire carriers
My 31 roadster came with dual side-mounted spares that I'm trying to remove so I can get my skirts off. The brackets are riveted to the frame, so I can't just remove the whole works. The carrier posts will not come out of the brackets, and before I hurt them I thought I'd better see if anyone knew any tricks to getting them out. Are the posts keyed into the brackets, or do they fit into a taper? Or is it just 85 years of rust and bad manners that are keeping them in the brackets? Thanks for any help you all have!

I should add that I already removed the cotter pins and nuts from the backsides of the posts.

Re: Help removing spare tire carriers
Screw the nut on just to the end of the post thread, to save them from hammer damage, then use a big hammer and nit the post and nut squarely on the center of the nut and post. They can be really tight. I good impact hammer might help also.

Also the three holes that were in that back panel need to stay there...Ford used some sort of hole plug in the holes...kinda like ones you would use in an electrical box to fill an empty hole... the covers were painted body color.

Re: Help removing spare tire carriers
you are not saying. is the body off or not. if the body is off the slash shield will come off over the arm. then you can remove the bracket and arm together. if the body is on and you have an air hammer with a chisel bit. remove the nut and take the air hammer and run it side to side on the bracket on the outside of the frame. if you give it enough shock they will come loose.

Re: Help removing spare tire carriers
Thats one way to loosen modern front end parts that are a taper, a couple good hits and they pop off !

Re: Help removing spare tire carriers
Thanks, everyone, for your help with this. I got the body loose and was able to remove the skirts over the arms. Because the transmission is still in the car, I couldn't get a good swing at the end of the arms. However, the judicious application of heat and using two 5 lb. hammers allowed me to break them loose from their tapers. Mission accomplished, thank you all!
