Rusty, Might I make a suggestion to prevent the Curious Georges of this world from ruining your day? Your gas tank filler is right out there vulnerable as all hell. Just get a locking gas cap from Bob Drake. Good quality vintage design, cheap insurance.

You are 100% correct. My 49 GMC is same but thats always locked in my garage or in view from where its parked. I will definitely add a locking cap to this one before its sitting around at a event.

1 was a mechanic for railway express in the 50s. they were the largest shippers in the world. most people today never herd of them.i lot of drivers got hert from the sliding doors, they would drive with there foot out in the summer when they had to make a suden stop the door would slide foward

Yea they were pretty huge from what I’ve seen. The doors have really cool cast iron catches to hold them open that work well. They must have kept those brakes adjusted up tight hahaha. Mine are ok but probably not enough to slam the doors shut. My doors are a little stiff sliding also.

So in the 50’s was it common to be working on trucks like mine? I did see some creative repairs like a cracked up steering gear mount to frame that was all welded up. Someone replaced the passenger side front leaf with one with the locating pin set rearward like 1.5” too far. Front fenders were cracked and gas weldes in center.
