Tim,
They show up on Facebook with that phone #, but no website. That number crosses to someone in Aledo. Try 563-260-0492. Let us know if you were successful. Looks like a well made rear shock mount. |

Re: Rear Axle Shock Mounts
Those look a lot like the late '40s originals. we usually shortened 1 side so they were even. For that kind of money, they are a bargain if they come with the special square head long bolts the mount through the grease baffle, axle housing, wishbone and shock mount.

The bolts for this style were complicated. If I recall correctly, they were stepped and had a series of bushings that slipped into the holes of the plate steel mounts. The forged ones were of unequal length and the long one is often sectioned to make them equal. The bolts for the forged ones (as I mentioned in my post above) are just like the flat, square headed bolts Ford used for backing plates, just longer so they mount the shock bracket. As I mentioned, it took me a year of checking in with various NOS parts vendors if they had them. Jeff Titus found some NOS ones and was willing to part with them. Not sure why I was so obsessed about using the correct Ford bolts, but long bolts would work as well. |

Re: Rear Axle Shock Mounts
Just so you guys know - it is important to consider which banjo rear you're going to put them on. I didn't use my brain and ordered two sets (thinking I'd run them on late 32-34 rears). They're not designed for these early rears - and really can't be modified to fit - due to the clocking in the backing plate holes, angles needed for the shocks to mount correctly, etc.. What he supplied are a nice looking product - just won't work for my application - and that is my fault.
I'm going to design ones that will fit (in CAD) - to be laser cut from 3/4" steel. Obviously mine will be "fabricated" - but I really don't have any other options that I know of. I will report back on what I "learn" along the way and I offered to send the above vendor the geometry needed for a 32-34 rear . . . might help him if he wants to create versions for these earlier rears. |

Re: Rear Axle Shock Mounts
Here is an older set my friend had. They are forged and a little bit shorter than the ones made today. The new arms are made heavier too. The shock stud boss is welded on and the stud pressed in. With these the original bolts are used and the sleeves with hex nut heads are threaded inside go over the original bolt.
When I set these up I will post the bolt size I used.

Seems like I have seen that iteration in the past. I stand to be corrected, but I don't believe Ford made that pair. They just appear to be a bit crude for Ford production. Below is a forged pair, much cleaner in design and appearance than above, but I'm still not sure these are original Ford pieces, either. This drawing BELOW is supposed to represent the original Ford pieces. DD Now, for a RELATIVELY new bracket that is the 'nuts' is this beauty from "Mac's Speed" in New Zealand.....NOT any other Mac's! They will bolt-on to 1935 through 1948 axle bells. Contact Graeme McNeill....email: [email protected]. These are $265/pair SHIPPED! These are really good looking. LINK Below! Sounds like there were many variations. Thanks for sharing from your archives....

Re: Rear Axle Shock Mounts
Most of the major aircraft tube type shock manufacturers had conversion kits of their own. The big bolt welded steel versions are in that category.

Re: Rear Axle Shock Mounts
I've got a couple sets of '35-'36 rear tubular shock mounts that are triangular in shape and bolt to back area of the rear radius rods using 3 bolts. They seem to be a pretty easy installation or removal. I've got pics filed somewhere that I'll post if I can locate them.

Re: Rear Axle Shock Mounts
Hey Guys: I think it is important to share as much information as possible about which rears (years) these are designed for, with which style of radius rods, etc.. Most of the ones I've seen are for late rear setups - like 1940+, they are not designed for the earlier cars and rears. Example: 32-34 rear ends.
I'm going to be working on some designs that will hopefully fit a 32-34 setup - will report back in a month or two on what I find (as I need them myself!). |

I agree. They are also not designed for 35 & 36 rear ends. I had to make my own as to my knowledge there was nothing on the market that worked for those years. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Last edited by Bursonaw; 09-15-2021 at 09:01 AM. |

"Bursonaw" is correct....not much going for '35 & '36 rears. But look how simple HIS remedy is. That appears to be a simple 1/4" L-shaped bracket that easily can be made to bolt-in to the flat area (probably TWO bolts used) just in front of the upward turn of the stock '35-'36 'bones. It also appears that he MAY have welded the short leg of the "L" which runs parallel to the transverse spring. Simple and SLICK! DD . |

Re: Rear Axle Shock Mounts
Ford made them beginning in late 1947 if I remember correctly. The were the odd sizes for the panhard bar fit.

Re: Rear Axle Shock Mounts
Rear axle shock mounts designed for adding tubular shocks to '35-'36 Ford passenger cars (except for convertible sedans, & late 36's built with '37 type rear) and light commercial vehicles.
Apparently, mounting this kit did not require any new mounting holes to be drilled. I have a set of these mounted on my '35 3w coupe.

Re: Rear Axle Shock Mounts
This modification originally came from another member on the Ford Barn or the HAMB. After some research and thought I decided that this was my best option for me to put tube shocks on my car. I was taking the rear end apart at the time so it made since to do the mod at that time.
For those interested, this is what I did for my 36. First I made a template to figure the angles for the lower mounts as they are not at 90 degree angles. I did this before I pulled the rear out of the car. Make sure the car is sitting at the ride height you want. I cut and drilled 1/4” steel plate and set them to the angles I needed and then had them welded up. I did have to heat them with a torch after they were welded to make some minor adjustments so the shocks would mount properly. I then match drilled the wishbone bars to the predrilled brackets I just made. This proved to be a little more difficult than using my drill press. The forged casting on one of the wishbones was so hard I had to take it to a machine shop to have a hole end milled. I used standard shock mounting bolts and front shocks that I purchased from SoCal speed shop. After measuring the shock travel and measuring the suspension travel I determined where the crossmember needed to be drilled. I had to modify the crossmember to accommodate the shocks. Note, if I had used shocks without the dust covers I would not have had to modify the crossmember. The car rides nice and I’ve put many miles on the car since this modification. At the time I did this a few years ago, the conversion was less than $100. It just took a little time and thought. In the end i think it looks like the factory would have done something similar. Hope this helps someone in their future conversion. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
