Default 33/34 phaeton top irons

Has anybody had any experience removing the lower mounting bracket pivoting screw that attaches the top irons to the lower mounting bracket? It appears to be a normal slotted screw but even using a impact hammer does not want to budge it. Picture attached.

I think the top irons were all riveted together. If it is a screw heat it up with a torch and it should come loose.

It is a threaded screw (only threaded at the end and not where the top iron pivots around the shank of the screw).

Thanks, I'll put the blue flame spanner to work and see what happens.

Dave, These are ugly Screws to get out. An alternative solution would be to leave it in and clean the irons and support.
On my 34 Ford Phaeton, someone has had a go at trying to remove it with no success.

Trevor,

That would be okay if he wants to only paint the top irons (standard phaeton), but in the photos it appears that they were chrome plated and a good plating job cannot be achieved with that bracket(s) still attached to the top iron(s).

David, I have never seen Chrome Plated Top Irons on a Ford manufactured in Australia. All of the ones that I have seen are painted Black, including both of my cars, which are totally original.

Corrosion has a way of welding parts together. Heating it and melting bees wax down in there might do the trick. Impacting it without beating it to death can sometimes get the corrosion in the threads to soften & break free but it takes a lot of patience to do these type of jobs. If it ever does break free, you may have to keep rotating it both directions to keep the threads from galling until it will rotate out without much torque applied.

Trevor,

I did not know that the irons weren't plated on the Australian top irons, but I could swear that clip in the top of the photo is plated.

This is the mangulated Bolt supporting the Top Irons on my 1934 Ford Phaeton. Someone before me tried to remove this Bolt without success. For that reason, I suggested to just clean it up as best as possible without removing it. The Top Material was peeled back to get this Photo.

These are the Painted Top irons on my 34 Ford Deluxe Phaetons. They have always been painted and never Chromed. The Upholstery shown in the bottom two photos is the original Leather. The Upholstery in the Top Photo has been replaced, but the Top Irons on both cars are untouched. Ford Australia never Chromed these Top Irons.

One of my best friends is working on a 33 Aussie phaeton the same cyolor. His is body P8 and I will have to go look and see if the bows are painted--I think they are. I wonder if all the phaetons down there were painted this green color originally.

This 1933 Ford Phaeton is Body number 40P8, a very, very low number indeed. It may be the lowest surviving 33 Ford Phaeton in existence, although I did hear that 40P5 was also in the USA? While it is painted Green, not all 33/34 Fords were painted this colour.

My 33 phaeton is an American bodied standard one. Black with black painted top bows. Most were deluxe versions. My friend with Aussie bodied P8 lives about 10 miles from me here in the Northwest part of the US.
Pictures in my public album area.
