eBay is now testing the waters with a new startup here in California called Close5. It was first tested in limited market areas but will roll out nation wide if it is successful. It works like a garage sale by letting you post pictures on their app and getting others in your area to buy the items without having to ship them. It only works locally and eBay gets a fee for getting the seller and buyer together. I like eBay for buying things if the seller offers free shipping, but I myself stopped selling items because of those high fees! If enough people stop using eBay for selling then they may get the point.

Re: latest ebay fee increase
Yep, was watching one of those collector car auctions on TV and it was said that the talk between the bidders as they were bidding obscenely high prices for cars was the 2% increase they have to pay on Ebay.
Good grief!

Re: latest ebay fee increase
interesting to hear everyone's opinions on ebay
I completely agree on the selling aspect, I no longer do-they priced themselves off the chart and didnt take care of their sellers, only the buyers. SO yes, now I am only a buyer and for the most part find it a great forum to purchase from. I can "see" so much more then driving from from flea to flea. Of course the fun of going to swaps is gone, but when you need parts, admittedly the internet is the way to go today. The only "real" competition ebay has is with Craigslist, and they own a portion of that as well. I do find CL often brings the bottom feeders, but there is a place for everything.... Would be nice for ebay to take notice of what their sellers have to say, and adjust to the many sellers they've lost, but that would be too easy. They will probably just run the business in the ground like Comcast and a few other behemoths................ |

Re: latest ebay fee increase
I buy and sell on Epay all the time. I have had my share of ups and downs with buyers and the stupid, expensive fees charged. I am not a hoarder or speculator. I sell only parts in order to buy other parts I need. Rather sell on the Barn or the Hamb and sometimes C/L. Epay is the last resort for me, but be cautious. Buyers are protected and have you by the short hairs so you have to have confirmed delivery. If relatively expensive I send insured requiring signature. Have gone so far as taken pictures and made unique identifying marks on things sold to protect myself. Basically we all can agree the fees are outrageous and a last resort point of sale. Rather be a buyer than seller there.

Re: latest ebay fee increase
I agree with you all about the fees. I am also aware that it is sad that we are not selling on ebay any more because many of us have those hard to find parts that are not available any more because we are not selling. Another sad story. I see that Apple is trying to start an application that allows you to sell stuff using your smart phone.. Maybe they will give ebay some competition without robbing us sellers.

Re: latest ebay fee increase
Ripped off for sure. Sold a NOS voltage regulator, buyer claimed it had been mounted before and not NOS. It was returned scratched up and marks of being mounted. It appears the buyer got a NOS part for free. I was left out the shipping charges for its return and a used and abused part on the shelf that I likely can not sell. Still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. Rod

Re: latest ebay fee increase
Haven't sold on Ebay for several years, ever since they required that payment be made with Paypal and all the fees that nickel and dime you to death. Too many other good sites for selling stuff. I do still buy on Ebay as I don't have to pay any fees to do that.

Re: latest ebay fee increase
Rowdy that sucks.
Another reason swap meets are a good venue. I hope that guy that ripped you off wasn't from Fordbarn. Most everybody on here I've dealt with are very honest. |

Re: latest ebay fee increase
I suspect he is a member of Fordbarn, but do not know for sure as I do not remember the name or user name without looking at my invoices. It was for a later flathead. Wish I had a good way to test it to see if it worked or not. Maybe I could atleast break even on the return shipping fees after it sold.
The purpose of me posting this is because it seems there is alot of this going on. Along with many buyers buy then don't pay. I have had 11 of those in the last year. Yes, I got my fees back, but wasted time in packaging and the hassle of filing an unpaid item dispute. Guesse I am getting alittle burnt out at a time I really need to be selling more. Rod

Re: latest ebay fee increase
One thing I have to say on behalf of PayPal is I got my money refunded because I used PayPal making a purchase. A website was advertising a very low price on motorcycle parts.
I ordered from them because they excepted PayPal. This was not affiliated with eBay just a internet company selling motorcycle parts. Several weeks passed and I started to worry about why they were not responding to my emails, but had $400 dollars of my money. I finally put a claim into PayPal and was told they would look into the matter. A short time later PayPal said this website was closed but someone forgot to take it down off the internet. They said we apologize for the mixup and my money was refunded asap! Not sure if I would have gotten my money refunded without PayPal involved. Was a happy ending!!!

Re: latest ebay fee increase
RE; Ebay Well ok, some don't sell because of fees or what ever but you buy! I guess if everyone selling parts took that route there would be nothing to buy.
Yes I sell on ebay mostly because when I need to pay bills I need the money ASAP, not after X amount of emails and waiting for a check or cash then for a couple of day for the check to clear. Yes I too cringe at the fees but boom the money is in my Pay-Pal account and bills are payed. While yes I/you can accept Pay-Pal, but if it starts showing too many transfers among friends on my account, things may click on their end. Otherwise as a seller, to be safe, you will still be paying merchant fees. Last edited by redmodelt; 06-06-2015 at 09:22 PM. |

Re: latest ebay fee increase
Might be a bit off topic but it bothers me that I have to pay $20 to bring my car to a show and Spectators get in for free, I feel it's backwards. We spend all the time, effort and money to restore our cars then have to pay to show them to others who see them for free.

Re: latest ebay fee increase
I wondered ed the same thing as the guy that scammed me was for flathead ford parts. The guy that got me also sells stuff. Since you can't leave buyers negative feedback and the so called report a buyer does nothing the sellers have little recourse. After finding out he scammed another person I just hate to see more people fall prey to this easy way of ripping off other people.
Best place I found for sellng is Hershey. but its more of a vacation then anything. Buying for my own projects and what I sell just helps pay for what I bought. Greed ruins everything Quote:

Re: latest ebay fee increase
I have sold many things on Craigslist as well. You have to take serious precautions to protect yourself and in many cases the buyer will agree. There are all sorts of scammers out there and many are criminal types. Common sense tells me to only meet the buyer in well used public places for the exchange and never meet at your home if possible. I generally take a friend with me as witness or if the deal involves big money I take personal protection. Sad but that's the world we live in.

Re: latest ebay fee increase
I have been using Ebay almost as long as it has existed. Mostly for buying parts, but occasionally I have sold on it. In the early days, you could send a check or money order, then they forced the use of PayPal and its been steadily down hill. But, my biggest complaint is the clutter of stuff you get when you do a search. For example, if I search on something very specific, like "1940 Ford Grill", I'll probably get many pages of hits, but most will be for generic items like nuts and bolts. Who want to wade through all that junk and what does it have to do with my search? I wish there were a good alternative to Ebay.

Re: latest ebay fee increase
I have built my own personal junkyard off eBay - it is way too easy to buy with PayPal and the high percentage of sellers with free shipping. Love swap meets but it's much easier to find old parts on eBay, CL, FB, HAMB, etc.
I really don't like the hassle of going to the post office to buy a money order - PayPal is so much easier. eBay has gotten pretty frustrating the last few years by cluttering up the search results making it more time consuming. Never sold anything but sounds like it's not worth the time, trouble, and risk. |
