Default 292 Thunderbird eng??

I have a 56 Country Sedan wagon with a 292 that came with a Holley 4 barrel carb and dual exhaust. It has the Thunderbird engine logos on the front fenders. I have had a couple people tell me that the logos were put on aftermarket because the thunderbird engine has to be a 312. I have heard from others that there is a 292 Thunderbird engine. Can anyone tell me if my car did in fact come with a 292 Thunderbird engine or did someone stick the logos on after the fact?

For passenger cars I believe the 292 was standard in '56...and the 312 was available as an option. '56 T-Birds came standard with the 312.

In 1956 the passenger cars could have two Thunderbird logo-ed engines- a 292 and a 312. Both had Thunderbird badges on the front fenders. The 292 valve covers said "Thunderbird V-8" while the 312 said "Thunderbird Special". We bought a 56 Fairlane Town Sedan new in 1957. Had the Thunderbird logos and valve covers. 4 barrel and dual exhaust.

The '55 Thunderbird's were 4bbl dual exhaust 292's, '56 and '57 T-Birds had both 292's and 312's. Due to the popularity of the T-Birds Ford created a 'Thunderbird' option package for their full sized cars.
It included Thunderbird dress-up badging and logos.

My Dad's '56 Fairlane came equipped that way when he bought it new.

All 56 Fairlanes that left the factory with Y-8 were a four-barrel,dual exhaust 292 unless a 312 was specified.All other models ordered with a Y-8 were 272s,unless the person ordering it specified a 292 or a 312.What is the first character in your VIN?A letter M indicates a 292,a letter P indicates a 312,a letter U indicates a 272 and a letter A indicates a 223 six cylinder.And 56 passenger cars were not available with a 312 until after March of 56.

Below are some good links on decoding the VIN of your Ford. In summary ... if your car's VIN starts with an M, then it came out of the factory with a 292 4bbl.

The standard V8 in '55-56 was a 272 - 2bbl. and the 292 - 4bbl. was an option, called the "Thunderbird V8".

Yes it is effectively the same engine as the 292 available in a '56 Thunderbird.

Spoiler Alert ---
It must be a very well kept secret (since so many folks don't know) and was most likely just an overly successful sales & marketing thing...
Engines for '55/'57 Thunderbird's were built with the same parts as any other Ford car, and were not some mysterious engines 'never used in anything but a Thunderbird'.
The Thunderbird's (and most Mercury's) usually got upgrade performance-option and some dress-up parts a year before the 'regular' Fords to keep those models 'top-of-the-line'.

And yes there were several specific 'Thunderbird only' bolt-on parts in '55/'57 but those were just to let the engine fit into the lower, narrower, longer engine bay.
Given some slight year to year differences, the same engines were available for virtually all y-block Ford's & Mercury's. You could even order your new '57 Ford y-block sedan with factory/dealer installed; dual 4bbl carburetors, a special camshaft, or a supercharger.
