Default Adjusting pressure plate fingers - right or wrong?

I was told today that the fingers on a pressure plate are pre-set by the manufacturer (in this case Fort Wayne Clutch & Driveline) and should not be readjusted. They were just over 1". I adjusted them to 11/16". Did I do the wrong thing?

I set mine at 5/8". The previous owner had them at about 1/8".

I just called Fort Wayne Clutch & Driveline and spoke to "Pat". Their number is on ebay where I bought the assembly. Pat was very nice and told me that they are set by their shop when built and should have been set correctly. He had no problem with the adjustment I made.

My experience has been that pressure plates come from the supplier usually not adjusted correctly. In order to adjust it correctly you should have it bolted to a flywheel with whatever clutch disk you intend to use. The clutch disk should be new or within spec. At the factory they would be using a flat steel plate that has the required thickness. I doubt they take the time to do that, so they must adjust them by some other means.

I had a friend make a tool for me that I use to adjust pressure plates. It has a stop at either end that provides a window of from 5\8" to 3\4". In the center is 11/16". I use the center (11/16"). Anywhere in the window will put the release point somewhere in the middle of the clutch pedal stroke. One end of the tool will put it closer to the floor, the other end will put it closer to all the way up.

I have had good success using this tool.

Thanks Tom, that is a cool tool! I think I'll copy that if you don't mind!

I adjusted the fingers with everything together in the car, minus the tranny which I had pulled for another reason. It was a brand new set up.
