Re: Does anyone still use this
I was moving some stuff in the garage and came across the one I used at my very first job at a filling station back in 1972. It's been a looong time since oil came in cans so I imagine it will be relegated to museum status.
Mine looks just like yours :-)

I bought over 50 cases of 1950 oil at an auction all metal not paper cans and I therefore use it regularly. Every old. Car guy has at least one in his garage. Wayne .

But come to think of it, I haven't used one of those in years, not since they switch over to the plastic jugs. Still carry one in the toolbox of my '57 Chevy's trunk (why...I don't know), but I buy the 5 qt jugs when I change the oil in the Model A. Some of the young'ins today would not have a clue as to what that was used for. Same goes for one of these...

Wow! I used to use one of those all the time. I should still have it somewhere.
Does anyone remember when canned oil went away? I couldn't say. Ken

Re: Does anyone still use this
I worked on a Volvo with an oil leak in the rear. An OLD worn cardboard Quart oil can was dripping out the tool compartment drain plug!
We LOVED the old square Anti-Freeze cans, cut the side out & made bolts/nut trays. Even soldered an old radiator cap on the bottom & hooked them on the radiator, when doing engine area work. For under car work, used a coffee can with nail holes in the bottom & a wire hook to hold them. Then we'd just dunk it in the carb cleaner, to clean the nuts/bolts/etc. We had 4 carb dip buckets & somebody in the past had built an electric powered gearbox, a shaft with 4 cam lobes with BIG hinges above them. Just hook the baskets to wires on the hinges & they would agitate up & down. A carb was squeaky clean in 5 MINUTES!! Somebody had built a Power Steering Test Bench, with motor, pump, gauges, etc, to adjust & test steering gears, BEFORE they went back in the car!! We did a lots of Chrysler/Plymouth steering gears. They were interesting, with their re-circulating ball design. The balls alternated, one blue, one silver, one blue, one silver----Well, you get it! There must have been a HUNDRED BALLS???? My '32 5 Window came with some OLD Plymouth steering box, always worked well, don't know what year box it was??? Recently saw a stock '29 Plymouth 5 Window Coupe, except for the WOOD wheels, it looked much like a Model A, even the bumpers could work on an "A" Bone. Bill W.

Re: Does anyone still use this
Still have one, but have not used since the mid 70's?? Always loved the sound it made when it slid into the can.
It is sitting right next to my glass oil jar with the screw on funnel lid. I am absolutely mystified that the oily glass jar has never been dropped! Last time my dad used it had to be the mid-60's. |

Re: Does anyone still use this
Well we used them up to the early 80s at the Shell station I worked at as I recall. I have a couple around somewhere. I stacked a LOT of cardboard cans on island racks in those days, we moved a lot of oil on the full service islands. Good thing cars seem to consume less between changes these days, not that long ago it was customary for about 10% or more to take a quart. I think the change to bottles took place not too long after that.

Re: Does anyone still use this
Country folks used RAIN water in their batteries, radiators & to fill the washpot for laundry. Many folks had rain water collection tanks & roof gutters to direct the water into them. I used to hide behind the tank, cuz my Momma wuz too Fat to get in there!

Here are my contributions to this post. These items have been there since the last time I used them which was ????????. Have also a "junior" model for the small amount of ??? Have some "modern" type to use on plastic bottles. (Which are rather old also)
No Japan on any items. Maybe they are not "that" old.

Re: Does anyone still use this
I went out to look for mine, but I either threw it out (rather unlikely for me), or it's buried deep in some forgotten corner. I was trying to remember the last time I used oil in cardboard cans, late '70s-early '80s?.

But, while I certainly have not looked for them, I don't recall seeing the 1 quart paper oil cans around for sale lately. Are they still around ? What I did prefer and use 'in the good ole dayz' was a 1 quart metal oil can with the adjustable long-neck pour spout. Like many, I would fill it from a 55 gallon oil drum. This device worked perfectly, without any drips or spills. |

Another feature of the cardboard oil can: If you weren't careful, when you tried to insert the spout, you would collapse the side of the can. The spout was always oily after use, so if you kept it in the trunk like me, you had to keep it in a plastic bag.

Re: Does anyone still use this
Started pumping gas in the late 50's while in HS. We had oil cans that you used the spout shown, later ones had a piece of rubber that was supposed to reduce/stop leakage, didn't work very well. We also had glass bottles at the pump that we filled up with a square tank with a pump, a bulk oil truck came and filled it. When we were doing oil changes we used a gallon pitcher with a flexible metal spout. We called the oil in the glass bottle "bottled oil" and I recall we charged .25 per quart. I believe the .25 oil was reclaimed & reprocessed It was a Mobil station and we had 3 grades of canned oil costing .35-45 & .55 a quart, the .35 was 30 wt and the .55 was 10-30. Must of punched a hole into a million of those cans. If I recall they started to be replaced by plastic in the early to mid 80s

Re: Does anyone still use this
Remember the NEAT noise they made when pushed into a can?--ZIIIIIP! And the smell of hotpatches?
Chief put his used oil in a barrel, with a faucet, it would "MYSTERIOUSLY" disappear??? With copper tubing & another barrel in the back room, he converted the Pot Belly to burning used oil & coal oil. Didn't stink as bad as COAL! Gabe Caldwell used to bring us COAL & later brought ICE, in the same old '36 Chev Truck, with the back fenders half rotted off. Idiots would say, "You smell like GAS, you work in a fillin' station"??--"I don't smell anything"??? Bill Old

Re: Does anyone still use this
I have a couple of neat ones still around. The one on the left was nice for old straight six motors, like slant six's,or Rambler and GM six's.Slam the can down on it and it was instantly empty.I still use that in the garage for pouring gallons of oil in trucks. The one on the right is nice,it takes the metal quart cans nicely but the cardboard ones tend to hang up in it.It has a thumb button and a flapper valve in the bottom. The spigot flips down like the old fuel spouts did at the tank farm.Park the truck just right, lower the boom, and let her rip.As you can see I have a couple of sheds full of this trash. Most of this I've picked out of the dump since I was a kid.

Re: Does anyone still use this
I used Pennzoil in the cardboard can in my VW bug until 1985. Then switched to Quakerstate mainly because of the handy plastic bottles. Always ended up with a half quart extra so the replaceable covers on the plastic bottles were great. Plus the oil spout on the cardboard can ALWAYS leaked.

Re: Does anyone still use this
The store had a good sale on quarts of oil in the cardboard containers, so I bought 3 cases of 24 quarts. This was about 1974, but by the time I got to the second or third case, they were only half full because the oil had seeped out through the cardboard.

If I'm remembering it right, Associated or "Flying A" was one of the last in our area that had oil in cans and used the sales slogan "Real MEN Don't use bottles"
Might do a search later and try to pin down the year, but I'm thinking early 70's |

Wow that image brought back memories of corner service stations and my dad ... I can almost smell the oil... That's what I like about greasing my car.. The smells brings me back when my dad would work on the family cars... Thanks for the photo.

Re: Does anyone still use this
One of my favorite smells was going into the machine shed on my grandfather's farm, and smelling the oils and grease in the tool room. It was such a neat smell and can rarely be found anymore. I know it can't be found on the old family farm because the new owner's burned every building to the ground so they could plant another 4 acres of crops.

On the subject of pouring oil from a quart container, does anyone know the right way to pour from these plastic bottles?
Looking at the picture, would you tip it to the left or tip it to the right? |

Re: Does anyone still use this
Somebody just emailed me and told me that the odd shaped funnel on the left in my picture was for gallon cans.I just held an old rectangular can over it,sure enough it fit.I never knew why the funnel was shaped that way until now.I still have some Sears Roebuck oil in those gallon cans. One of them is in my picture.Blue and white can..
