Default generator mystery

Today I wired the truck and hooked up the generator for the first time.It is running by its self like a starter motor.Does this mean my cutout points are stuck?

Yes, your cutout is likely stuck

As a reminder the cutout is a relay that only allows the voltage to move from the generator to the car and not the other way arround. While there is a regulator sold today that looks like a cut out, cut outs of the day were not regulators.

Just information for the casual reader of this post.

If you have a diode cutout and install the battery backwards the same thing will happen.

Many repro cutouts are poor quality and have problems with contacts burning (overheating).

I just installed the diode kit that sell for about $8 from Model A parts suppliers. You pretty much gut your existing cutout and put the little diode thingy in and bam, you've got a modern unit that looks origional from the outside.
