Modern Shocks, what is it?
Someone converted to tubular rear shocks and I want to replace them. Trouble is, I can't figure out what they are. Chances are, they're old, say 1970s and may be a discontinued model or number. They are rusty and it's hard to get numbers off of them. I did get "Made in USA" so I can assume they are Monroe or Gabriel. So far, the number I'm getting is 161--12 or U2. They were factory painted black.
The shock has a eye at each end, no threaded rod. The hole in the top rubber bushing seems to be 9/16 and the bottom is 5/8. The distance between the hole centers, fully extended, is 17 1/4 ", Compressed is 10 3/4". The large Diameter (Top) is 2", the bottom is 1 3/4" Anybody know what the are? In researching this, I found a shock which was very close, but not the same for a 56-58 Buick. Thanks in advance. Terry |

Take one in to your local Napa or Carquest and they could probably match one up for you.

Re: Modern Shocks, what is it?
I would think that if that shock was designed for a Buick it would be much too stiff for the Model A, could even be VW. I have the Snyder kit on the rear of my roadster and they seem just right. I didn't use the front set that came with the kit because they were just too stiff after I tried them so on the front I have rebuilt Model A's

Mitch, I think I found it! L1 & L1 37098 with a 6 1/2 travel. It ain't perfect, but its the closest. I guess it's discontinued model.

Re: Modern Shocks, what is it?
Funny thing that you should mention VW. One model we were looking at was a 1955 VW! Until we found out it was no longer made. I came to the same conclusion about the Buick shock. It would be too heavy for a model A.

The shocks on mine are P/N 42039 off of an early Chevy/GMC pickup or van.

Re: Modern Shocks, what is it?
I found them but they have an S4 mounting system at both ends (3/8 threaded rod/stud) which would make me have to change everything around to get them to fit. I use the L1 (round eyes w/rubber gromets) However, The two sizes and travel seem compatible.
