1930 tudor sedan wheel well patch
I ordered the inner rear fender panels. Is it best to install the whole patch panel or cut out just the areas that is rusty and install that portion?

Which ones do you have? The cheaper ones do not have the correct contours and rib sizes.

When I did mine I used the whole panel and it made a very clean look when finished.

Re: 1930 tudor sedan wheel well patch
Can I weld the new panel over the original one or do I need to cut out the old one and butt weld the new one in place?

Cut the old metal out and butt weld the new seam.

Do not double skin the wheel arch it will never fit true and also will be a future moisture trap .I go with Tom ,go back to good with straight cuts MIG and grind back .Metal prep the area then good quality primer skim of bondo, paint and the repair will see you out .

Re: 1930 tudor sedan wheel well patch
Hi
regarding your inner fender panel repair. Insurance companies approved welded panel replacement but called for use of a spray, silver colored compound to sprayed on both ground panels. Then spot welded. This would be for replacement of a rear quarter panel..the panels are overlapped about an inch. You will still get condensation between the panels in time. Bute welding is better but tricky as the fitting will take some time. Grinding and cleaning the welds must be flawless or rust will start again. We made spot welds every inch for strength. At least this is a hidden area...so you may to able to do patch work later with out too much trouble. The silver compound we used was sold in a auto supply shop that sold paint materials to body shops. Best of luck... |
