Default head studs

Looked at an engine yesterday that is claimed to be overhauled with a high compression head. The studs all had almost exactly 2 threads above the nuts showing and had hex head slots in them. Never seen those hex slots before - is that a correct stud?

As far as I know, the top of the stud should have a round dome finish

Hey John,
IF you are talking 'stock' Model A/B Ford, no not correct for judging standards.

What you saw and describe are most likely ARP made. If you have ever removed A/B engine heads, you will find that the stock studs are not easy to remove and in lots of cases....snap / break at the block. The ARP studs that have allen or slot type heads , you can use an an allun wrench and/or screw driver to hold the stud and/or remove same...handy but not stock.

When I fitted the Winfield High Compression head, all the original studs were a fraction too short except the one for the anti-theft cable.
I had to get new studs machined up out of high tensile steel.
These proved more accurate than the set I had bought and the head slipped on effortlessly.
It is possible someone had new studs machined up for your motor and thought to add slots to simplify installation?
