32 Door latch mechanism
Hey guys, I need some help with a door latch.
Problem is, the outside handle wont open the door, acts like its locked, works fine from the inside. I took the latch mechanism out and found that at some point the spring had broken and someone had drilled the connecting arm and the door inner panel and put a spring there. First 2 pictures. I have never messed with a 32 latch so Im not positive, but I think the added spring is pulling the arm in all the time and thus not allowing the outer handle to work. When the lock tounge plate is in the tounge lock position, and the arm is in the inner position, in the slot, Picture 3, which the added spring was holding it, the outer handle wont work, but when the connecting arm is in the outer position of the slot, Picture 4, the handle works.. Im thinking the only thing wrong is it just needs the correct spring put back on it.. ? And while Im asking, where would be the best place to get the correct spring ? And its missing some screws, I think I got some windshield screws from, ford bolts ? Thanks guys, |

Re: 32 Door latch mechanism
As I recall when the inner door handle is moved in the opposite direction from opening the door it puts it in lock position.
In effect what someone has done by adding the spring is to put the latch in permanent locked position. It seems pretty obvious that the correct latch spring should be installed. They are available at various venders mentioned in this forum and also on Ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/32-Ford-Car-...JRIafE&vxp=mtr http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ford-1932-32...wUQwbg&vxp=mtr http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ford-1932-32...dX-7sN&vxp=mtr .

Re: 32 Door latch mechanism
If you pull the flat linkage rod rearward about an inch or so (away from the latch) as in the last picture you posted, with the additional spring removed, that should allow the outer handle to operate the latch. With the linkage forward, as shown in your other photos, your in the inside door handle lock position.
You are correct the additional spring put the door latch in the lock position all the time. Last edited by Terry,OH; 11-06-2016 at 07:25 AM. |

35fordtn here on the barn (Michael Driskell at [email protected]) likely has the correct spring to replace the broken one.
