Default Rear Axle Rebuilder

Well the 41’s original rear axle is starting to rumble on deceleration, so I think it’s time to get it rebuilt.
Trouble is that no one around my area either wants to or can’t rebuild it.

I want someone who understands these axles to do the work, so I don’t have any issues.

As you can guess, I’m in need of tried and true early Ford rear axle rebuilder recommendations. I’m all ears

Thank you
John

these axles usually when they start to fail "whine" upon acceleration, not quite sure what you are hearing. does it do this with the clutch engaged? disengaged? from what speeds are you decelerating?

The rear rumbles - low noise , it’s upon deceleration in 3rd gear mainly - if I put car in neutral the noise stops , put back into 3rd - noise starts
This just started about 20 Miles ago,I think pinion bearing is loose

Sometimes origin of driveline noises can be difficult to determine, especially when sitting inside the car. What sounds like noise from the rear could actually be coming from the transmission, or vice versa.
Finding someone who really has a lot of experience rebuilding these banjo rears is getting difficult, and if you find someone with experience, they may no longer care to do them.
I've always done my own because I enjoy doing this type of mechanical work. You might even consider the challenge of doing your own. There are also some good articles with pictures available on line that will help folks who care to learn.

rear end in my 28 has done that for probably 20 years now... it went all at once. one second it didn't whine, the next it was an eggbeater on deceleration. something definitely broke in my rear. maybe a cracked pinion support.

edit: my rear is from a 47 btw.

found a rear axle in a 41 pu that had broken the pin out of the coupling and a piece of the pin became lodged in the area around the double nuts on pinion when the truck was put into reverse it unwound the pinion nuts. sounded like the driveline was going to explode, owner swapped out the trans but noise stayed, we found the problem and fixed it.

Check with the Dearborn group of the Early Ford V-8 club. I'm sure they can point you in the right direction.

My 52 Merc had a very noticeable whine on deceleration. I found the nut on the front of the pinion needed tightening. Problem solved. It runs quiet now. Probably could use a new seal as it leaks a little oil.

Have you checked with Mac Van Pelt just a short drive south of you?

John,
If you could get the car to TN, I’d take a handle at it!

1963turnerjohn, do you have any mechanical ability, if so you can do the work yourself, then you know what you have. I did my own because of bad axle on passenger side, everything has to come out the driver's side. There's plenty information about rebuilding them and a lot of FB will also help. I did mine without removing the center section, but if the pinion is the problem, you will have to remove the complete drive unit to get to the adjusting nuts. Al
