I believe that the difference is the location of the shifting mechanism. The S10 is farther forward than the mustang type.

The late '80s/early '90s Mustang W/C T-5 is a better choice over an S-10 because of better ratios, internal improvements and higher strength, but the S-10 tail housing swap moves the shifter forward and next to the gear box. A 1" adapter will mate the trans to any '49-'53 Ford/'51-'53 Mercury bell housing.

Almost, you need the half-bell and the hogshead plus the adapter plate or a half-bell and one of the aftermarket cast adapters.

First photo is an aftermarket cast adapter
Second photo is half-bell, hogshead & 1 inch plate adapter
Third photo is line drawing using a half-bell and aftermarket cast adapter
Forth photo is half-bell, hogshead, 1 inch plate adapter & S10 T5

Hi..i'm in the way to put Ford t5 on my potvin powered flathead,,and i see that there are other ways to put the shift level forward,,,a remote lever mechanism is the right way,in a mustang web page there is one type for sale....other easy way i try is to buy a opel corsa c shift lever.....or at least is not really difficult to build one yourself......

You just need this 1" adapter for a Mustang T-5 to bolt to the '49-'53 Ford/'51-'53 Mercury bells. A '51 Mercury is the one shown and is what I'm using in my avatar.

Definitely go for the late model Mustang. Better ratios and MANY improvements over the S-10.. I have used the 1" adapter plate but for my current build I am using a Quick Time bellhousing from Speedway Motors. Not cheap ($570.00) but I believe it will hold the critical engine to trans alignment more accurately..

V8 Bob you are correct! I was thinking the earlier years 8ba Mercs and trucks. I am going to have to slow down on my reading!!!

I like the remote shifter using the original shifter location and shifter. That's what I am using with a Ford T5z transmission.

I think this is what was meant by a remote lever

Where did you get that adapter, I've been making them, but this is a better and cheaper way to go

Ron, I bought my adapter from Mark Kirby (MCF) about 15 years ago. They may still be available from him at Shadow Rods, and are from Modern Driveline, below.

Believe Wilcap has them. V8 Bob what years of the bellhousing has the cross-shaft clutch fork setup?

The major production '51 Mercury bell housing was the only year for the '40-'48 cross shaft clutch release. ( JFYI, I'm using a '32-'39 cross shaft in the one pictured.)
A few early '51s used the '49-'50 stamped steel 1/2 bell and round patterned transmissions.

That adapter works with the 49-53 Ford and Mid 51 merc bell housings using all stock parts except the disk.
