She had to be coerced into the first date by her landlady. When she saw the old car in the driveway she wanted to cancel this first date.
Hope you enjoyed this little story. Jeff
He was so cheap he wouldn't even buy her an ice cream cone. I heard he used recycled farts for something.

As Usual, Tom is correct! I forget the name and country of origin, But there definitly was at least one diesel tractor made with that starting system.

Tom, it looks like many have backed this up. I just thought it odd, but I believed you. Apologies for sounding like a smart-ass. Chuck

I first learned about this oddity when I was at the Rollag Threshing Show in the 70's. They had a one cylinder diesel Lanz, and a one cylinder Field Marshall on display, and the owner showed how to start it with the shotgun shell. The show also has a very large one cylinder diesel stationary engine that shakes the ground when it runs. Rollag, MN is just a few miles east of Fargo, ND.

This is a fantastic show for anyone who hasn't been there. Mount Pleasant, Iowa also has a huge threshing show that I need to attend sometime. These are the two largest threshing shows in the nation, I've been told. Plan to spend a couple days to see it all.
Both shows are held over Labor Day weekend.

The Lanz is a cool tractor. It will puff perfect smoke rings. Jeff

Anybody ever seen an oil bypass filter that uses a toilet roll to filter the oil? My father ran one on his Peugeot for years. The many layers of tissue filtered ANY crap out of the oil. If your used oil were allowed to soak its way through one of those, I'd give it a go if analysis confirmed that the useful additives were still there and hadn't been filtered out. Yup, they are that good.

Maybe over there. The locally made ones were branded Ryco here.

Rig up your own filtering system to filter the oil. I'm thinking of something like using this,

you can hang the end over a bucket and pump the oil into the filter using a pressure pump (not vacuum) like one that it used for bleeding brakes, or even a garden sprayer.

This gave enough cylinder pressure to spin the engine and it would fire up. Other brands of these one lungers were hand cranked using the steering wheel! The wheel with about a 2 foot shaft would slide out of the steering column and be inserted into the flywheel to spin the engine.

Not only WWII aircraft, but some later ones as well. Not shotgun shells without bb's, but an explosive charge. The English Electric Canberra was one, also known as the B-57 in the USA.

Also the F-4 Phantom used cartridge start as a backup.

The F-111 also used cartridge start as back-up as well.
