Default E-Z steer

What is the cost for a E-Z steer unit and is it worth the change and cost? Thanks

Club members did a group buy. The E-Steer units are not good. I would repair your original ford box.

My friend with a 30 4-door has an E-Z with problems and is going back to a F-100 box from Mel Gross. I have a F-100 in my 29 coupe by Mel.

I have the second E Z Steer unit on my 31 S/W. First one had 4 inches of free play in the steering wheel.. I sent it back and they sent a new one. The 2nd one has 3 inches of free play in the steering wheel. There is no adjustment for excessive free play in steering wheeel. It is coming out of the S/W this summer and I am going back to Model A gear box or a rebuild from Mel Gross. The cost of the E Z Steer was $850 plus $30 shipping.

I've got pretty much the same problem with my EZ Steer. It's still got 3-4 inches of free play, even after John (at EZ) told me how to adjust it. What's the cost of Mel's unit?

I thought that I would add my 2 cents worth. I purchased 2 of these 2 years ago and they sat in my shop until April. We had a club reliability session at my garage in April. One of the guys had an EZ Steer and it had way too much play. I offered to swap it with one of my new ones after I called EZ Steer. It turned out that the replacement was only marginally better than his unit. I called them again to get instructions to get it replaced a few days later. I have the units in the corner of my shop. Now is mid June and I get the same excuse that they are waiting on new parts.

About 7 or 8 months ago I had the 2 original units in my shop replaced because John told me at Hershey that the original sectors were improperly heat treated. I sent them back and after about 6 weeks I got the replacements which we used in the reliability session in my garage.

The next step should be trying to get these to work correctly because it does not appear that EZ Steer is able to do it.

Comments welcome.

If anyone comes up with a solution, I for one would certainly like to hear it. I'm sure the other 999 that have bought these units would also.

An F100 was/is my choice also! Notice that an 'EZ' steer is stated (by customer) as working 'as good as an F100' box! A life lesson is always be leary of this type of comparison when shopping!
What a great eye opener...that HAMB thread! Hey, just because "John" was in 'summer camp' (on our dime!) doesn't necessarily mean that he didn't learn anything productive there! Laughing all the way to the bank too, my guess.

A few members in our club have been talking about buying the EZ Steer units for our 28's to improve the "jack rabbit" steering. It was even thought by a couple of the guys that the EZ Steer might even be somewhat helpfull with the 30-31's. I just finished assembling a Gemmer 29 for one our 28's that I thought would be the answer, until a couple of the guys started talking of ordering a club batch. Haven't put the rebuilt Gemmer into the 28, as of yet.
Read the Hamb also, but will wait until more opinions have responded here. As it was mentioned at our meeting....there were some problems some time back, but they have since been rectified ????

I think this has been a very good thread, informative.. It seems I recall this being discussed some time ago and a couple folks here stated how satisfied they were with the ez-steer..

One of the reasons I bought one in the first place.

The first E Z Steer unit I bought had the "not properly heat treated" problem and it was replaced. The second - or replacement -that WAS properly heat treated now has the same too much slop problem.

I tried to purchsce a unit from the EZ steer company a ciouple years ago. I sent my 800 dollars to John and that is when the bull shit started.I was told I would have it in 2 weeks,4 weeks passed and I called and " honest John lied and said it would be shipped next day and he was adjusting mine while we were talking.Never was shipped !Another week ,called again John said he was out of parts,Sound funny !Well I called again and said send back my money,Insted he has a dealer send me a box which I recieved a week later.I opend the container and found a box which was put togrther with no gaskets and sealed up with blobs of clear bath tub calk.I finally said in our last phone call again I wanted my money back.I work in large the Model A business and deal with great Model A customers every day and this guy is a company to stay away from, Try Mel Gross box. I have 2 in my cars and they are great.Dont be abused and lied to as I was ,Hope this helps
