Default What year is my engine is???

My 56 T-Bird has a spin oil filter which 56 did not have I think. 57 engine does it have? My T-Bird came from the factory with a 292 Vin starts with P6FH246 and so on. I got some pictures of the carb and riverside spin on oil filter and right side of block with82 above block drain valve.

In 1956 "P" in the first position of the serial number is the code letter for a 312.
"M" is the code letter for a 292.
See this link... http://www.portholeauthority.com/thu...ch/engine.html

That's what engine it left the factory with, not always what it has now.
The block casting number should be just above the oil filter. (location example, photo 1 )
ECZ-6015-A (photo 2 ) or ECZ-6015-B would be correct for a '56 depending on the date the car was built.
A chart of block casting numbers and their years is at this link...
http://ford-y-block.com/Block%20identification.htm

Ford put the spin-on filters on the engines beginning in '57. They were/are a very popular owner add-on, and Ford sold the adapter kits over-the-counter at the dealerships.

The carb, intake manif and distributor look correct for '56, they are one-year-only parts.

There was a paper someone wrote showed the P was for 292. Thanks that makes me feel better. Still I think the engine with a spin oil filter is a later engine.

OK above the oil filter here what I found. Hard to read. 8015C. then behind it was C2AF Now it was hard to be correct.

The spin-on oil filter on the block was an add-on adapter thru '64. The bare blocks were not re-cast / re-machined to mount the new different (spin-on) oil filter.

C2AE is a '62 thru '64 block. C = 60's, 2 = second year.
First built for / used in '62, and held over until Y-Blocks were discontinued in '64.

Look for a three character Date Code near the top center of the other side of the block, the first number is the year.
example photo: 5 = 1955, A = January, V = 22nd letter of the alphabet = day of the month
.

'62 ? Check the date code on the block to know for sure. (see reply # 6 above)

312 ? ..Not very likely but it isn't impossible. "Some 312 replacement blocks were C2AE-6015C"
Quote from this link... http://ford-y-block.com/identify312.htm

To positively ID a 312 without measuring the bore & stroke you need to find a dot on the rear flange of the crankshaft and / or "ECZ" cast into the main bearing caps (of a stock / unmodified engine).

All the engine block casting numbers have "6015" in the middle. The prefix and suffix are what changes.

The casting numbers are often hard to read. The casting itself can be lumpy & unclear, then throw in a lack of good light and several years of discoloration and some misc crud.

A few years ago I met a guy from Albuquerque, N.M. that had a 51 Ford with full race flathead with a blower Green in color. Do you know the car. I know it a long shot. I have a 50 Ford Crestliner and was at a Shoe-Box meet and that car was there. It was a nice car.

Nope, haven't seen it. I don't get to many other 'car' events. Usually just our monthly T-Bird club outings until this virus thing happened and stopped that. My wife isn't well and has to stay close to home.

That good of you caring for your wife. We have been together for 60 years. The T-Bird when I get it to run as it should I want her to drive it. Trouble I got 3 projects going on now. I know that crazy but I got to finish them. One is a 32 Ford 3 window all original, 63 Corvette Split Window also original and the 56 Thunderbird. The Corvette is about done and the 32 is 85 percent done. Now the 56 is about 10 percent done. I have had the 32 the longest about 4 years I been working on it. They keep me going each day. My two grand daughter's will get them some day when I am gone. They get it all I guess.

The blower equipped 50 Ford is unknown to me but Joe Abbin has a business there that sells blowers for flatheads. Roadrunner Engineering is his business and he wrote a book about building up blower equipped engines.

The 312 wasn't produced in very large quantities after the FE and small block Ford engines came out. Most of the later Y-blocks were 292 CID and a lot of them were used in trucks in the years from 1962 through 64. A person would have to confirm the crankshaft as to whether it'e a 312 or not. It could very well be but the odds are not in that favor.

All Ford Y-Blocks, car and truck, after 1957 were 292's, except Mercury who used 312's thru 1960 with a 2 barrel carb.

I think I stand corrected here. pretty sure 272 Y-Blocks were still offered in F-100's in '58 and '59, along with the 292.

I had always heard that spin on filters were a factory option in 56 and standard in 57.
