And that, ladies and gentlemen, is a perfect example of why it's pure stupidity to place your bid early.

Actually if you place your max bid early, ebay snipes for you. And if you tie with a sniper the sale goes to the first bidder...

Placing a bid early to me is like showing your cards at a poker game. It allows others to seek you out and top your bid which of course are the wishes of eBay and the seller.
I always bid at the last few seconds. Sniping programs from what I can see prevails over eBay's proxy bidding. It seems those that employ such systems win the most auctions.

Only because their max is greater. I'll let them pay more than I think it's worth, no matter if they bid in the 1st day or last second. If someone seeks me out and is willing to pay more..let them.

I am thinking the ones that were on my car for show were n.o.s complete with hardware. Reason they are not on anymore is the New JS. states forged bar introduction of 1930 to April 1930 //// May 1930 to August 1930 stamped steel ///// back to forged bar. So for the second French Lick meet i had made the correction since my car is a late July/Early Aug. car.. You can not use the license plate clips on stamp steel bars.[ i have NO CLUE what was used and no one that i know ,knows . ! i have 3 out of the 4 clips n.o.s. extra of a incomplete set and a super used set .Like Gary Karr said maybe time to hide under my bedroom pillows...L.O.L.

I ceased being amazed long ago at what foolish people do.
I guess there are still some people in this economy who have no conception of the value of money. That price probably means very little to whomever bought it.

Well ..... There is obviously a market at that price . The desire to have a fine point car has driven the prices this high. Unfortunately I don't have a fine point car- Living in New Zealand means there is not a huge local supply of NOS or orginal parts to do a fine point restoration with and to be quite honest I have heaps of fun with my car as it is. I try and keep it as original looking as I can . Probably only one in a hundred people or less would notice the minor deviations from original on my car(and 1/2 of those would spot original features as non original !) I also would probably not use a fine point car as much as I do now. However if I did want to fine point my car I guess you have to pay the going rate -plus 1/2 a world of postage in my case as well-Karl

As NOS parts get harder to come by the prices will only go up. when you are putting a fine point car together it is the last few points that could cost you the most. today we do not have the luxury of finding NOS parts like we could 30 years ago and it is only going to get worse.

Yes and no. Yes the other person can creep up to your bid and beat it but if your top bid is the most you're will to pay what difference does it make, the bidder will put in the max amount he is willing to pay.

Look at it like this... Let's say there is a left-handed wobble washer that shows up on eBay. It's super rare and I've been wanting one for a long, long time. Regardless of what it's really worth, I'm willing to pay $1000 for it because it's the last thing that I need to complete the restoration of my Blue Sky Hook. Truthfully, it might only be a $100 part but I missed out on the last three and there's no way in the world I'm missing this one.

So I have two options... I can bid my max bid of $1000 on the very first day and let the chips fall where they may, or I can wait until the last possible moment and hit it for $1000. The problem with bidding early is this. Some guy out in east BFE also wants this wobble washer, but he's a cheap SOB and wants it as cheap as possible. He's the type that'll place a low bid and see what happens, and if he becomes the high bidder with his $100 bid then he goes on about his week as a happy camper. HOWEVER, if he hits it for $100 and is automatically outbid, he's still got 6 days and 23 hours to mull it over. Chances are good that he'll hit it again for another $25, and again, and again and again. Guys like this will keep pecking away at an item until they either run the price through the freaking roof or they get to be the high bidder.

In the case of this left handed wobble washer, Cheap BFE guy has all week to keep coming back and bumping the price of the auction and by the time it ends, it could easily be up to $600 or $700 bucks. Granted, that's still under my max price of $1000, but the truth of the matter is that if I'd just waited until the end of the auction I would probably have bought it for closer to $100.

This ain't rocket surgery, guys... Look at the bid history on the license plate clips and you'll see exactly what I'm describing. The winning bidder placed the first bid on Jan 12 at 10:59 PST. On Jan 13 the bidder with 1402 feedback bumped it four times and then on Jan 16 the bidder with 40 feedback hit it NINE times and ran the price all the way up over $100 in order to become the high bidder. The previous high bidder then realized that he had been outbid, so he placed three more bids in order to become the high bidder once again. Around here they call that a pissing contest. If you go back and look at Mr. Newbie with 40 feedback's first bid, it was $29 and if it weren't for the initial bid of $100 from the first guy, that likely would have been the only bid that guy placed. The $100 guy could have sniped it for $100 and would have probably bought the clips for $30. So in regards to Mike V's original question of "what difference does it make", in this particular instance it made about a $93 difference.

I agree with dlshady 100%. If you bid early there is almost always
somebody that chips away at your bid, granted you may still be the high
bidder at auction end but if you sniped it chances are good you will pay less.
I'm always happy when I get it for less than my max bid and disappointed
when I'm the first place looser.

ok I bid $1000 max on day one. Some one chips it up to $900 over a week. Some one else snipes it at$1000. I win, as first bidder.

nobody bids till the last 5 seconds. bfe snipes at $1000. At 4 seconds I snipe at $1000. I lose

Nobody bids till the last 5 seconds. Since there are no bids, I bid my max of $500. bfe snipes at $1000. I lose by $1 by ebay proxy bid for bfe of $501.

I bid back and forth with bfe from $1 to $999. (i'm winning at this point). Someone snipes at $1000 (my real max) and I lose.

I bid my max of $1000 on day one. no one else bids. bfe snipes for $1001 (more than my max) I lose.

If someone is willing to pay more than my max...i lose. if not I win. If I lose at $.50 more than my max it could be because the winners max was $10,000 more than my max, but I would still lose by $.50 because of the proxy bid.

You've got to be kidding me, some people have way too much money and too little brains to pay that amount for those items.
I've got two sets, complete original with all the right hardware, and a jolly good patina, should I sell and retire early.
I'll even throw in a historic backstory with them.
Seems Bonnie & Clyde looked at them once from far across town late one moonless and rainy night.
Thats my story and I'm sticking with it...
