Default Gear oil

How many miles would you drive your A to get the gear oil warmed up to drain it out & replace with fresh oil?

Ford said to drain the gear case, add kerosene and run it a few minutes and drain that, then add new oil.

A '26 Studebaker manual said, "Remove the shift tower & wash it out with GASOLINE"

For all my years owning Model A's, I just do one thing when draining fluids. Put pan under drain plug, open plug, and let drain for at least 24 hours. That's 60 years worth of service advice. U joint is another question.

Bill,

Or just wait until summer when it's over 100 degrees in the San Joaquin Valley. That should do the trick. We'll get that here in the I. E. in a coule of months too.

I had to drain the gear case/differential on my 8N. Man that black goo was Thick! I found I could make it run faster by heating the bottom with a Propane torch. I wouldn't hesitate to warm it up somewhat that way.

The reason for flushing with Kerosene or whatever else is to wash out any metal fragments. I collect them with a magnet on the drain plug. I just let it drain over night, clean the magnet and refill.
