I have used the Vintage Chevrolet Club of America's forums several times and may not be as active as this Model A section but I got the info I was looking for.

Once read an article about the Small Block Chev design, being a competitor, to replace the Flathead Ford, in 1954, Ford cars. The MUCH heavier "Y" Block won out.
IF SO, the S.B. was designed by a FORD TEAM??
