Very simple for one person to crank over to check for spark. From passenger side of engine just reach over top of engine and work the starter rod. Be sure car is out of gear, parking brake set and ignition switch on. Very easy to check for spark at points and/or plugs for one person.

I do the same to check for spark, but I always stand on the left side.
Don't know why I would choose the right side?
