my new fancy-pants motor lifter upper
i know, some would think i have too much free time. but i always wanted one. it travels on a beam to adjust the angle, and was cut out to exactly fit the outline of a manifold, so used for painting the block too. i hope when it goes for a buck at my estate sale they can appreciate my labor time! my new "fire breathin monster" 59a engine for my coupe hangin there.

Re: my new fancy-pants motor lifter upper
I like it. I have built some, but not adjustable. Nice work!

Re: my new fancy-pants motor lifter upper
That looks real good. May I ask how you anchored the end of the long horizontal bolt on the end opposite the head? (It has to spin, but can't move longitudinally.)

Re: my new fancy-pants motor lifter upper
Maybe you should paint it yellow or they may think that it's part of the engine.

Re: my new fancy-pants motor lifter upper
tubman, the threaded rod is 3/4", and i turned the ends down to 5/8, which barely removes the threads, and then welded 3/4" nuts back on both ends after its assembled. my coupe is a bare frame now, however when i changed motors in my tudor i discovered you need quite an angle to get high enough to get over the front crossmember, and yet keep the trans low enough to not wreck the fire wall. usually working by myself, i need all the help i can get

Re: my new fancy-pants motor lifter upper
"cas3" - Are you just running the turned down parts of the 3/4" rod in bare steel or do you have some kind of bearings/bushings for them to run in? I had a friend several years back that made a similar unit (without bearings/bushings), and while it worked, it took a lot of effort with a 1/2' drive ratchet to get it to turn. I'm in the same situation as you and need things to be as effortless as possible.

Re: my new fancy-pants motor lifter upper
Seems the site will not let me post any pictures. don't know what I am doing wrong. I tried doing it the same as I always have. cant load any pictures. wonder if it has anything to do with the recent upgrades Ryan made.

Re: my new fancy-pants motor lifter upper
tubman, yes, i have no bushings, just the 5/8 rod turning in a 5/8 hole. its new, i havent used it, and i assume it will need a 1/2 rachet to turn when loaded, but with some oil i dont think i will wear it out. i had more concerns with the slide on the beam being too hard. i thought about making the beam a T and using some leftover 34 brake rollers for it to roll on, and decided i had enough time in it already and it should work just sliding. even if hard to turn, it should be better than fighting the wrong angle, and damaging other parts because of it. you are close. borrow it if you like! the load is on the beam, not the threaded rod. steel plate welded underneath.

Re: my new fancy-pants motor lifter upper
JSeery, That may be the problem, although I did not check, usually all my pictures are taken with the same camera, at the same settings. I will have to look into that. It was odd because, I tried the regular upload method, and I also tried copy and pasting, but that would not work either. I tried copying and pasting to an e-mail, and that worked fine. life is tough when you are computer challenged. lol.

Re: my new fancy-pants motor lifter upper
51 Merc-CT, yes the picture I was trying to post was a close up like that, but at a different angle. Thanks for blowing it up. not as fancy or as adjustable as the one cas3 made, which is very nice, but it was something I did in my spare time before work in the morning, back before I retired

Re: my new fancy-pants motor lifter upper
I appreciate the innovation and craftsmanship, but Pep Boys sells a load leveler for your engine hoist for $29. The loop for the crane hook is moved fore and aft on a 1" screw with a crank. It has two short chains on either end with "L" feet to bolt to four corners of the intake manifold surface. I put the engine into my '41 with the transmission attached. The leveler made it easy to go from a steep angle entering the engine compartment to near flat as the engine approached its final resting place.

Re: my new fancy-pants motor lifter upper
No pep boys in Alaska, no K-Mart either. we do have Walmart, but they do not carry much for automotive or Marine stuff. just oil and stuff, cheap plastic hub caps, air fresheners.

Re: my new fancy-pants motor lifter upper
JSeery, Thank you for the offer, but 51 MERC-CT blew this one up, you can get the idea from it. nothing fancy, or super adjustable, but it works for me. Thanks anyway for the offer

Re: my new fancy-pants motor lifter upper
Nice job ! I have one of the PepBoys levelers , and instead of cranking away w/a 1/2 drive hand ratchet , I use a 3/8 drive air ratchet . Much easier & faster ! - F F
