Default Radiator Quail modification

Has anyone ever tried installing a thermometer in a "plain non thermometer Quail"? If so what is the best procedure?

All of the thermostats that are mounted in a radiator cap on a model A are more for looks than function and the Quail never had that option originally. The probe sits so high, away from the coolant, that the readings, with no numbered scale, readings lag behind because they are not immersed in the coolant at the cylinder head. A poor gasket on the cap that emits steam is real time data on what is happening under the hood.
