Default Finally flew in a Ford.

I know a lot of you have flown in a Ford Tri-motor before and today I got my chance. This beautiful 5-AT-B (serial number 8) was built in 1928. Had a great time.

I flew in one in Florida last winter. It was the best $75 bucks I have ever spent. Great experience. The guys running the airlines could take a few hints from these guys.

The bi-plane is on my bucket list yet. The Tri-Motor I have done. I can't find a bi-plane operator in Southern Illinois or St. Louis, Mo.

I agree, well worth the money.

Here are a couple of more photos. Check out the wood control wheels.

That looks like a good time. The cabin looks 1st class compared to what I always had thought they would look.

A low flying Lockheed Hudson collided with a 1935 Ford on that beach in February 1943;
several people were killed.

Man, I want to do that. Years ago, one of those Fords lived in Ottawa, Kansas and they gave rides sometimes. We went down there to do it once, but something went wrong and I've always regretted it. Glad to know I might still be able to.

Flew on the same airplane a few years ago. Here is my 1937 Ford Fordor De Luxe on the ramp with the Ford Trimotor at the Ford Motor Company Airplane Hangar at the old Ford Airport, Lansing, Illinois (now KIGQ).

The steering wheels, even though they look to be solid wood, seem to have the same overall shape as a banjo wheel!

v8coopman, is that a B-36 over the beach? I was crew-chief B-52G- 70-74. I would like nothing better than to have an opportunity to ride in a Ford Tri-motor, but I doubt that they will make the flight to Alaska any time soon.

That was a Lockheed/Vega B-34, which is more along the lines of the Ventura Bomber, that collided with the 1935 Ford Tudor on Galveston Beach. That was February 21, 1943. The five men in the bomber were killed and the father and his six children in the Ford were seriously injured. The Ford was hurled about 30 feet by the impact with the bomber, which collided with the grille, hood, windshield and roof of the Ford, tearing the roof off. A real tragedy.

I got to fly co-pilot in the EAA Trimotor after the Ford Centennial in 2003 , took the stick for a half-circuit. Dream come true!

An amazing aircraft the Ford.... As a boy, I often wondered wh ythey skinned it in what looked like Barn Siding... Certainly had to add to the aerodynamic drag - but I believe it was one of the first all metal constructed aircraft.

Took a ride last year when the Tri-Motor came to the Napa airport. Best $75 I ever spent. Nine of us from our V-8 regional group flew on it. Great fun and should be on the "bucket list" of any V-8er.

A total of 336 sparking plugs in those six engines. 26,160 cubic inches of Pratt & Whitney "Corn Cobs", producing the most-wonderful airplane noise that ever passed overhead, for those old enough to remember. DD

leon bee, I wondered the same thing, that is why I ask if was a B-36. The only B-36 I ever remember seeing was at Chanute AFB when I was In Tec-School. I marched by to and from school every day. never did get a chance to really look at it up close.

There were three tri-motor Fords flying around Long Beach. Then one day they were gone.
We also had two DC3/C47 planes here, last week was the last time to see them, sold to some South American country. I don't know if any of the Grumman Gooses are still here, they were fitted with pontoons. Flying back and forth to Catalina Island. Trip was better than the Island.

Alaska Jim: I think all the first ones just had props and they added the jets later.

Early models were piston only. The B36D onwards had the blowtorch extra's. The jets were to improve takeoff performance and high speed run from nuclear deployment, but were not needed in level cruise.

A friend of mine has some interesting original pictures of 2 Tri-motors owned by local flying legend Cyde Ice. Several people are lined up in front of "The Sprint of Spearfish" and the Spirit of Belle Fourche". Among those pictured are Al Capone and Calvin Coolidge(in the same pictures together) both of whom spent time in the Black Hills area
