Default Locating 1937 Ford Heater Hose

I’m replacing the rotted out heater hoses on my ’37 and don’t like how they were positioned. The driver side heater hose went from the lower radiator hose to the lower connection of the heater with the shut-off valve positioned in the middle of this long hose. The passenger side hose went directly from the cylinder head to the upper heater connection.

Would it matter if I located the shut-off valve on the passenger side instead? I don’t believe it does, but just want to make sure.

Thanks in advance for your help/advice.

Maybe this picture will help you. I've been told by some that the hoses as seen in this picture should be reversed at the firewall input/output...

Re shut-off valve location: As a general rule, the valve should be in the line coming out of the head (the "hot" hose going to the heater inlet). This prevents possible over pressuring the heater core when the valve is off. If the valve is in the return hose (heater outlet), when the valve is off full water pump pressure is trying to balloon the core since the coolant deadheads and can't circulate. This pressure is in addition to any radiator cap pressure and can be significant at high RPM (especially before the thermostats are fully open).

Thanks Allen and 40. I just ordered a shut-off valve from C&G which will replace the old valve which was located near the middle of the long heater hose which goes from the driver-side lower radiator hose to the lower heater connection. This new valve is the type that screws into the passenger side cylinder head. I never liked its old location anyway as the hose laid on the frame beside some electrical wiring and was hard to operate.

As Allen posted, the hot line from the head goes to the bottom of the heater core. The outlet (top) of the heater core goes back to the bottom of the radiator.

The '39-40 hot water heater in my '36 is hooked up the same as it was when I bought the car in 1952.. Turn off valve is in the hose leading from the right side head.
The view of the hose routing is partially blocked by the Beehive oil filter, however, the shut off valve location is very clear.

I would assume that your car is a right side steering car. that being the case the hoses should be on the left side of the cowl.
The standard heater for a '30 model Ford is the hot air, manifold heater. Many people did not like the hot air heaters because of the risk of exhaust fumes leaking into the system, then into the passenger compartment. Many company's made universal mount hot water heaters.

Some people liked to place the hot water heaters in the center of the firewall, the location of the floor shift can obstruct the heater. Locating the heater on the passenger side of the firewall works well if a small heater like the '39-40 Ford heater is used, the common style of aftermarket heaters generally are to large for the passenger side.
For your information I have attached a pix of a '39-40 Ford heater in my '36 Ford.

A footnote about my comment in #10 regarding the center placement of a heater in a '30 model EFV8.
With the introduction of the column shift in '40, in '41 through '48 Ford generally placed their heater/defroster unit in the center of the firewall which was a good location because it allowed heat to get to the rear passenger area, however, it is a poor location for the hoses, routing around the fuel pump, etc.

Many people are of the believe that the proper location for a heater in a '40 or earlier vehicle is in the center of the firewall. locating the heater on the passenger side allows for a clear path for the hoses

Where did you locate the control switch for the heater ? The book suggests, without showing exact placement, a location to the left of the steering column “almost to the A pillar” - where would this likely be relative to the starter button location ? Thank you.
