Default Ford Starter Rebuild

I am doing a rebuild of a ford starter and have removed the 2 brushes that are held on by screws. Now the other 2 are crimped on by heavy duty tabs. What is the best way to bend these tabs back to remove the brushes? They are are quite "stiff". I have tried several times to bend them back, trying not to disrupt where they go back into the starter winding's. Thank you.
