Default Mart's Crusty Flatty Pt3. Teardown continues: Crank removal!

The teardown of the crusty flathead continues.

In this thrill packed episode I undo some nuts and take the crank out. That's the short version.
I have to get inventive to get on a hard to access nut, due to being unable to turn the crank.
I edited out the repetitive bits and sped up a lot of it.

Anyway, come and join me as I get down and dirty with some Flathead Fun at Mart's.

Its getting a bit cool in the workshop for that kind of stuff here. Plus I hate taking things apart now because the parts inevitably seem to get stored away (lost) and by the time I want to put it together, I can't find them. But yes, a full disassembly is the only way my 53 engine is going to ever progress. I still have hopes of the 49 breaking loose one day without disassembly.

Thanks Mart, enjoying your adventure and it reminds me of when I was in shop class many moons ago.

Mart,
Your step by steps are far more entertaining than 90% of what's on Motor Trend....IMHO. Package yourself and find a network.

Another entertaining video Mart. Just a note for you, if you look at minute 25:25 of the video: At the front of the oil pan rail on the right side of the screenshot the larger hole to the right of the crank timing gear indicates this is a Canadian block. To my knowledge it served no purpose but US blocks did not have this hole. Also on the pan rails, I notice the four core plugs seem to be in decent shape. On my block one of these was all but rotted away. May be a good sign - in your case - that corrosion in the coolant 'envelope' isn't too bad.

Cheers!

Glen

I agree...while I’m sure you enjoy doing them and sharing them is really appreciated..... it does seem that you should be compensated for your time and effort.... Thanks again!!!..... Mark

Mart, perhaps you can collect this engine tear down and rebuilding? on DVD's and market them. I am sure they would sell. Great videos and priceless comments and instruction.

Great video! Thanks! After more of these, I might get enough courage to tear down the block in my car for a rebuild

I never knew some flatheads used cotter (split)pins on rod nuts and safety wire on mains. Must be for industrial applications? However, my experience has only been with the later 49-53 engines.
