Lucas Aermore Exhaust Whistle

Gents,

I need some help from the collective wisdom. I have a Lucas Aermore Exhaust Whistle I would like to install it n my Model A. What I need in order to install it is an exhaust cutout valve for the stock 1 3/4 exhaust pipe. I’ve been searching the internet for one with no luck. Mac’s used to carry them but they are now discontinued. Does anyone know where I might get my hands on one or have one they are willing to sell? Thank you in advance for you help.

Actually, the tendency of users now is to cobble together something from pipe fittings and use a cheap ball valve as the "valve" to blow the whistle.

I've seen a couple - wondered on the life of nylon/teflon seats in a ball valve subject to high temperatures - and asked how its blowing on the part of the operators.

The couple I've queried say "it works."

A quick "personal safety analysis" on my part would prefer the valve be "below" the floorboards more into the airstream and possibly even aft of the cab for this - so when the seals burn out of the ball valve you don't poison yourself on Carbon Monoxide.

The original valves were placed in the juncture between the manifold and the exhaust pipe and this may be why (litigious society) the valve is not reproduced.

I would like a whistle. I was a steam power engineer in real life - back when I pretended that working is what life was.

I bought one from one of the Model A parts houses a few years ago (I don't remember which one) that attaches to the back of the exhaust pipe.

It would only be a valve with no great precision. It can't be too hard to fabricate one out of whatever is laying around.

It fits in a spark plug hole. A wire is attached to the lever on top and run into the cab. When it's pulled, the whistle uses cylinder compression to make the sound. As stated in the eBay ad, it requires an adapter like this:

More of an "attention getter" than an actual whistle. I think you hear the pulsations of the cylinder when in use.

The "wolf whistle" is another variant. But this one I don't remember as much cylinder pulsing.

Grew up in a college town in the early-mid 1960s when these sort of things were popular. Also the Hutchins Horns, usually on a late model car.

I've heard the explosion whistle sound described as a hen clucking.

The wolf whistle operates on vacuum, not compression - usually tapped into the intake manifold.
