What is that noise??
A few years ago I was out riding in my 40 Tudor, Minding my own business.
I heard a loud, strange sound and the car no longer moved. Clutch in, clutch out. in all gears, nothing . Got towed home (Expensive Road Service)and investigated. Slide the rear end back. I have an extra long flex brake line going to the torque tube so I can slide it back without disconnecting the brake line. Anyway the spline on the driveshaft by the u-joint was snapped off. I replaced the driveshaft and went merrily (?) down the road. Part two A year or so later, same thing, but I was a block away from the house, so my late wife pushed me home with her car. (Cheap Road service). Anyway same thing, pulled everything apart, But this time the spline was snapped off at the rear end. Got a good(?) used rear end from a friend and changed it out. and on down the road. Part three Took the old rear end apart and found that some of the bolts holding the ring gear on fell out and were bouncing around in the rear end housing. This is interesting as I had been driving the car for 20 years with this condition going on. Couple of bolts in the rear end decided to see if the would fit between the ring gear and the pinion. Unsuccessfully. So Far everything is good . |

Re: What is that noise??
Sounds like part three event caused both parts one and two!!
Years ago, I also broke driveshaft [tubular- 35 Ford] up by the universal joint too....

Re: What is that noise??
My 37 pickup had an unsettling clunk in the drivetrain when going from forward to backing up or the other way around. I pulled the rear end out, disassembled the torque tube and found a lot of play at the rear drive shaft coupling. Pulled it apart to find the splines on the coupling, driveshaft end, were almost gone. Luckily the driveshaft and pinion shaft were fine. I fit a new coupling and put it all back together.

Re: What is that noise??
The 40 driveshaft is a solid piece of American manufactured Real Steel.

Interesting, but how is that relevant to the discussion about loose bolts and stripped gears?

Re: What is that noise??
It was a remark on what broke. and was not the hollow type.
