Re: Oil level. Is your dipstick lying? Make sure you know what you've got.
Just a FYI, I filled an engine with oil today. A clean 8BA car style oilpan with the sump in the middle. Added a couple of pictures, 3 quarts, and then 4 quarts. 5 quarts (gave it time to run down into the pan)put the level a quarter inch over the full mark. Ran the engine up to temp, stopped the engine and immediately checked the level. Was just slightly over the full mark.

I assume you changed the oil filter as well. (The filter holds a significant amount of oil.)

Re: Oil level. Is your dipstick lying? Make sure you know what you've got.
Just to add more to this, it might have been mentioned already but a lot of the early dipsticks had some kind of gasket material under that round portion just below the curve at the top. Maybe it was made of some kind of felt. My 36 dipstick doesn't have this material anymore and also reads over full with 5 quarts. I don't know how thick the material was, but this may be part of our pbms. Terry

Whether your putting in 4 quarts or 5 quarts, it states in my Ford Reference book 1938 - V8 85hp and 60hp:
"It is not necessary to add oil until the level has dropped to the "danger" mark." It calls for 5 quarts for the 85hp and 4 quarts for the 60hp. Most don't let it get that low so just below full shouldn't be an issue.

Re: Oil level. Is your dipstick lying? Make sure you know what you've got.
Would you think that the amount above the full line would be about the amount that would end up coating the upper valve gallery, passageways, crank journals, etc. After an initial start up, then letting the oil return to the pan. Would it read at the full mark?

Re: Oil level. Is your dipstick lying? Make sure you know what you've got.
The amount above the full line is 8 oz./16 cu. in. which should pretty much account for most of the oil in the passages. And not all of that would drain back. It's close to the full line and that's all that matters, anything else would be over-thinking.

The stick is not what I was inquiring about. How about the hole in the pan and the dipstick "boss" that looks welded in from the back side? It left the factory with those welds, did it?

I like your fix for the leaky dipstick guide. Mine is doing the same plus a few other places. Curious if it is possible to get the pan off my 8cm in my ‘39 by jacking the engine up or if the engine must be pulled.

Re: Oil level. Is your dipstick lying? Make sure you know what you've got.
I have a question re: the length of the dip stick for a 59A block and pan. The dip stick I have is marked 8CM (late model) and is 16+inches from end to stop. I would like to know what the dimension is for a 59A dip stick from end to stop.
