All of this information is in the 1951 Mercury Body Parts Catalogue.
Wow, thank you!

Did Mercurys built before 1948 have a body tag that would tell the color , drive line information?

The factory Serial # of my 51 Merc is stamped on the Patent Plate as posted by Don Rogers AND on the top of the front right frame rail that extends at an angle from the right side frame rail to the center "X" member.

It is located below the lower edge of the firewall. Mine is a 10 digit number with a star stamped in front of the first number and two stars stamped right behind the last number. This number is also used as the VIN number on the Title of the car by the Florida DMV. If you buy a Merc check both locations for the same number.

If you own a 49-51 Mercury you must buy these two books. Prices vary so shop around.

Hope this helps!!
Thanks! This is great! My plate has the complete serial number 53LA47519M. I interprete that as 1953, Los Angeles assembly plant, serial number 47519, Mercury. It ALSO has the number BG70B 09-351-15K-169. I am struggling to understand/decode that. Any help GREATLY appreciated!

You are correct on the serial number. The data plate should be:
BG70B = 2 Door Sedan
09 = Tahiti Tan
351 = Brown/White Checkered Broadcloth
15K = assembled October 15
169 = rotation number or unit number that day
