A couple of neat old photos
An article in the "The Old Motor" website contains these two very clear early photos of Model A's
The text below the second one reads:Today we have a series images that originate from the Lone Star State and include people and automobiles. We have not had an appearance of what we refer to as the “Hat Women” for a while, but the lead photo certainly fits the bill for their return. Minnie Fisher Cunningham, who was a suffragette, hit the campaign trail in 1928 in a run for the US Senate in Texas. She is seen between two supporters in the lead photo in front of a Model “A” Tudor sedan. Her campaign ended when she finished 5th out of six in the primary. The text below the first one reads: Singer Jimmie Rogers is seen here posing at the “Cone Car Co.,” a Ford dealer located in Kerrville. The early Model “A” Ford touring car has been fitted with: plated windshield posts and stanchions, wind-wings, a cowl band and parking lights. Rogers was one of the pioneers country music. |

That phaeton seems to have cowl lamps like a pair I have in the barn. They mount to the welting flange behind the hood.

Old Motor used to post here a lot. Haven't seen them much lately. What happened?

Jimmie Rogers was Chiefs' & My HERO. Chief said the band traveled in Model A sedans, with instruments tied all over the car! They traveled to REMOTE radio stations & performed LIVE shows there.
I have his music in my computer & listen to it often. Google his history, it's fascinating & sad, also. Bill W.

Although born in Meridian, Mississippi, Jimmie settled in Texas. Known as the Mississippi Blue Yodeler, he died of TB in 1932, in a New York flop house. |

The photo of Jimmie Rodgers in front of his Model A pushes more than one of my buttons. Love music from the '20s and '30s, mainly old blues but also early country (from before it became commercial and schmucky!) Here's the song he wrote about having TB: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoQiZujWKQI |

Re: A couple of neat old photos
Thanks. It's all great stuff. I'm a fan of OLD blues and country.
That TB is bad sh.. . My dad had TB in the 30's in high school, and went to a "health farm", they called it. They treated him with sulfa drugs, that damaged his kidneys. We lost him to kidney failure in '72, age 52. Ol' Jimmie Rodgers had the right to sing the blues.

She didn't win either times but...she was still a woman to be reckoned with from a Alabama plantation family that lost everything. She did come close the second time though. Big in Texas politics.

Re: A couple of neat old photos
Jimmie Rogers has always been one of my favorites, but I didn't realize he went back so far (born in late 1800's). I thought he was just slightly ahead of my other favorites, Jim Reeves, Johnny Horton, and Patsy Cline. Over the past year I'd googled some of my favorite singers, such as Elvis, Ricky Nelson, Buddy Holley and a few others, and it's so sad how they all died so young.
Those cowl lamps on the 29 Phaeton have different arms than the stock ones. I wonder if the could be 1930 arms, otherwise they must be some aftermarket accessory. |
