Default 58 Ranchero 292 3spdOD Starter engaging in Run position

Hi fellas! It's me again with more problems! My Ranchero don't know when to quit! It all started when my battery slowly failed. It is an old battery which gave me great service. At the last, when it was turning slowly before quitting, the starter would not turn enough to throw out the bendix and the engine would try to turn even with no key in it. I figured out that the solenoid was shorted and would unshort with a few taps. So I put a new USA made solenoid on it. Then it would try to start when switched to the run position (not START). Since then I have replaced the battery and ignition switch(USA made). It STILL turns the starter over by just turning the switch to Run(not Start). Any ideas on what's going on?
Thanks,
Jeff

Sounds like the two small wires on the solenoid were reversed. The wire to ignition coil is sending the start signal to the solenoid.

Pamlico,
Here's a link to a '58 wiring diagram...
And ignoring the NSS because you have a manual trans, but including that Red/blue wire.

The wire to the "S" terminal on the solenoid from the key switch should be Red/blue, and the wire on the "I" terminal is dark brown or black.

The Red/green wire from the 'run' position of the key switch goes thru the ballast resistor to the '+' terminal of the coil.

40cpe is the winner! And thanks for the other replies. I did have the two wires reversed. I was going by the length of the wires at the solenoid. Now that it is wired right the red wire is tight and the brown wire has a lot of slack. Good to be back going again.....plus I learned something the hard way.
THANKS TO ALL!!!
