Spare Tire Carrier - Is there a gasket?
For the spare tire carriers that fit on the trunk of the Std Coupe (w/rumble seat), is there a rubber gasket, etc that fits between the carrier and the trunk?

Re: Spare Tire Carrier - Is there a gasket?
If you are referring to the spare tire carrier that is bolted to the rear body crossmember and through the hole in the panel below the trunk lid, no, there is no gasket that Ford originally used. However, what I have done is to glue old fashioned cloth electrical tape around the parameter of the carrier with contact cement to keep the paint on the panel and body crossmember from chipping. You can't see the black tape once the carrier is installed because it is so thin, but still protects the paint.

Thanks for the hint Rusty. It just bugged me to put heavy cast iron on new paint!

I think that piece was already mounted when the car was painted at the factory.

That would not make any sense. It would leave the area underneath unpainted or in the brown primer..

Re: Spare Tire Carrier - Is there a gasket?
The area under the mount on my 28 CDN Tudor AR was painted before the mount went on. It was one of the untouched areas of the car to show me the original color. Niagara Blue Dark. No gasket here so the body had developed a crease where the mount was bolted.

Re: Spare Tire Carrier - Is there a gasket?
When I have put my Model As back together, there are many places where two metal parts come together. If there isn't an electrical issue such as grounding etc., I place a very thin undersized rubber gasket between the parts. You can't see the gasket after it is assembled. If you are conscious of this technique you end up with a very tight, squeak/rattle free Model A. There are other advantages, the one mentioned above about protecting the paint and you may prevent corrosion between the two parts. Just my take on the issue. Ed

On my sons Vicky the corrosion was so bad the thickness of the sheet metal was as thin as Aluminum foil right where the carrier attaches.
