Coupe Rear Window U Channel
I have a late 31 coupe with original rear window wood and frame. The glass U channel rubber has dried and cracked causing the window to rattle. I removed the frame and glass and ordered a new U channel from one of the vendors. When I received the U channel rubber I noticed it was only about .4" overall width while the original rubber is about .625 overall width. This causes about a .25 gap between the frame and the window. I have searched this forum and others for someone that may have had a similar problem but could not find anything. Has anyone experienced a similar problem. Is there more than one style rear window rubber U channel and perhaps I was sent the wrong one? Is it possible something changed with the late 31 coupes?
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated Tim |

Re: Coupe Rear Window U Channel
Turns out late 31 indented firewall coupes used the same thickness wood frame as cars with the roll down rear window. My standard coupe did not have the roll down rear window. A thicker window U channel is needed to take up the gap. I looked everywhere and could not find anything that would fit. The original is stiff and cracked. I found a piece of RG8 coax fills the gap well and will reassemble using it although I would like to find a proper U Channel. Just a heads up for anyone replacing the rear window on a late coupe

Re: Coupe Rear Window U Channel
So what did Steve at Bert's have to say about it?
I am sure the right size is out there as I had to search for one myself back in 1980 when I did my 1929 Standard Coupe which by the way takes the same moulding. Like you said, the one I ordered from one of the ccompanies at the time was to small. Try searching on the net for rubber moulding companies...I am sure you will find one. Pluck |

I think perhaps back in the 80's or earlier they carried them because the one on my car looks as if it was replaced in the 70s when the cosmetic restoration was done. If anyone knows where to get this thicker rubber U channel for the rear window please let me know Thanks Tim |

Re: Coupe Rear Window U Channel
It is also the same "U" channel for the quarter windows.

Re: Coupe Rear Window U Channel
Tim,
Try this website for the rubber (Window Glass Weather Strips) "U" channels. This is the company I went to back in 1980. http://www.wefcorubber.com/contact_us.asp Pluck Last edited by Steve Plucker; 12-10-2017 at 11:20 PM. |

Re: Coupe Rear Window U Channel
Hansen, where are you? I went to a glass shop in Dublin, CA and he had it in stock. He also had owned a coupe so that may account for his having it. I replaced all the plate glass with the laminated glass as I drive this car, when I am not repairing it. Perhaps one of your local glass companies can help.

Re: Coupe Rear Window U Channel
I'm not positive but you might take a look at what is being sold for the 1932 Coupe rear windows. I recently installed the channel for my 32 5 window coupe and had no problems. Ed

Re: Coupe Rear Window U Channel
Thanks to all for the suggestions. Wefco has a large selection of U channel rubber and they have something close to what I need in stock. Thanks Puck
None of the vendors I called we're aware there was a special size U channel for the late 31 coupe. I suppose there were not sufficient cars manufactured to justify carrying this version |
