Default "32" Wishbone ball and cap assembly question

I did a search here on the Barn and came up with more questions.

Just went through installing new clutch, pressure plate and rebuilt the tranny. I dropped the wishbone and installed a new rubber ball. I noticed something doesn't appear correct when bolting in the cap for the wishbone ball.

Are these Model A bolts holding the cap, which are longer and spring loaded? In the picture you can see they are double nutted with a castle nut and cotter pin.

How does the ball receive lubrication? Maybe by design that's why old tranny's leak.

Apart from the obviously too long bolts, the original caps were stamped steel, not castings. It was not intended that the ball be lubricated, but as you point out it sort of happened because of the built-in tendency of the transmissions to leak at the rear.

Likely you can obtain the correct bolts at Third Gen Automotive (35fordtn here an the barn), although they may prove to be too short given the greater thickness of the cast cap compared to the original stamped cap.

Bert's Model A in Denver restored, maybe I should say built this car for Gerald Groswold 35years ago. That's probably where the longer bolts came from.

Is that a cast cap, or just a patinated steel original?

Mart.

It's cast, and is actually advertised as such by Bratton's Model 'A' Parts. Click the link below! DD

Yes, it's cast. My bolts are hex head not slotted as shown in the ad.
