32 cabriolet door check straps
Our cab has no door check straps at all, PO had an issue and the upper hinge broke.
I imagine they possibly have a leather strap?Though i cant see the appropriate holes. A curved flat bar with the rubber stopper doesn’t appear to work as it will interfere with the glass track. |

Re: 32 cabriolet door check straps
The original door checks were indeed curved steel with a rubber bumper on one end along with a flat rubber pad mounted inside the door.

Re: 32 cabriolet door check straps
Out of curiosity, do you know if your '32 cabriolet was built in New Zealand or Australia? if it was, the body may have been constructed there and not the US or Canada. There are some differences in body details depending on where the body was manufactured. Just something for you to consider. DaveG is THE expert and I'm not, so take his word first. I just happened to think about the possibility of a difference in body details based on the source of the builder.

Re: 32 cabriolet door check straps
Dave,
During the '32 model year, Ford New Zealand had no manufacturing facilities and the vehicles that they sold were sourced from Canada, not Australia. Further, Ford Australia did not produce a cabriolet during their '32 model year. The '32 cabriolet bodies were manufactured by Briggs in Detroit and in Canada by Motor & Coach Ltd. of Chatham, Ontario, an affiliate of Briggs. All '32 cabriolets sold world wide had their bodies manufactured by one of those two sources. Beyond their upholstery and top materials and one paint color possibility, the only difference between the two sources' bodies was the body tag on the #1 cross side of the body. Re: 32 cabriolet door check straps
I believe our cab was made in Canada . It came from NY originally but no real history. It has a 1x1 Tube structure and some flat plate conversion to LHD . No LHD column drop holes in the dash. But has RHD holes. the column drop and RHD hole in the floor for the column drop.
Maybe someone has pictures of something as mundane as the curved metal door check strap. |

Further clues that your car may have been produced as RHD would be the presence of the three small and one large holes for the steering sector shaft and sector shaft housing in the right side frame rail as a mirror image of the holes in the left side frame rail and a fair number of holes in the right side of the center cross member that at present serve no useful purpose on your cabriolet. Both Ford of Canada and Ford U.S. produced both LHD and RHD vehicles. In the case of Ford of Canada, their RHD vehicles were exported primarily to British Commonwealth countries while the Ford U.S. RHD vehicles were exported to non-Commonwealth countries such as Argentina, Japan, Paraguay, and Uruguay. |

Re: 32 cabriolet door check straps
Aha , thanks to DavidG , i poked around some more. A bit or square tubing covered the A pillar check strap hole ,possibly for a steering support for the LHD conversion . This will all go .and it may appear the bracket in the door has been torn out and covered over. Another archaeological dig is on the radar.
Pic 1 is the leading edge of the A pillar, Pic 2 is the inside of the front of the LH door, pic 3 the scene of the crime. Last edited by my4dv8; 05-18-2023 at 04:26 PM. |

Re: 32 cabriolet door check straps
I'm glad DavidG replied to what I put in my post. I only know enough to ask a few questions and fortunately he knows the correct answers. It's nice to have him help you out and you can be sure he will steer you in the right direction.
Good luck with your project and keep the pictures and questions coming.

Re: 32 cabriolet door check straps
Here are the photos that I promised (one day late). Note the rubber pad attached to the inside of the A pillar.

Re: 32 cabriolet door check straps
I'll post some pics of my 32 Cab stuff as well - though the kick panel will not be out of the car so you won't be able to see the inside of the A-pillar stuff.

Re: 32 cabriolet door check straps
Out of interest, which side is the outer door lock? If originally a right hand drive car it would be on the opposite door to the driver's side ie the passenger door so if your car is now left hand drive but originally right hand drive it would now be on the lhd driver's side door. David may correct me on that though. Keith

Re: 32 cabriolet door check straps
Yes, thanks, Pete.
Here's a detached check bar itself. The rubber bumper on the end is long gone, but its retainer is still in place. The angle of the photo makes the bar look wider than the 2 inch measurement, but it is 2 inches wide from bottom to the top of the tip. |

Re: 32 cabriolet door check straps
If the shape is close to correct - even if it is too long or short, easy to fabricate/fix/weld it to match what is needed.
