Default '39 Standard hood orn/handle

I just installed my Bob Drake hood orn/handle on my '39 Standard. It seems the boss on the handle needs some material removed so it will sit a little farther down in the ornament. I'm guessing about a 1/16 or so. Anyone had this occurrence? Thanks in advance, Rod

The tolerances between the two pieces were probably set before the chrome process. Once chromed they don't fit well as chrome adds material.

Hi, I figured out that it's not the top, but where the square on the shaft fits in the hood mechanism. Now I just have to be careful & not take too much off. Thanks, Rod

TJ, Just how thick do you think the plating is? Seriously, how thick?

It's going to depend on how it was chromed, but I would assume very thin on a commercial part. We would have the in house (Boeing) chrome shop add material to a undersized part to tighten it up. But that was in the couple of thousands range. Believe commercial plating is way less than a thousandth.

Found this reference.

Yep, my point exactly. And you can bet ol' Bob Drake ain't paying the Chinese for that super duper long lasting plating.

I was tool maker and thus know exactly what he was referring to.
My original point made to the previous reference of plating making a difference in ultimate fit stands on its own. Plating is so very thin, it won't make any difference- ever, on production parts.

I do not know how thick the chrome could be, but it may not take too much depending on the tolerances that were set when the part was made before chroming. I simply gave a possible reason why the part did not fit.

I was in tooling as well, the hard chrome is much thicker than the ornamental chrome.

Some years back I was restoring an antique wood burning cook stove for my wife. There was a decorative cast iron cover that had a hole in the center for a oven thermometer to fit in and was mounted in the center of the oven door. After having it plated I had to file the round opening in order for the thermometer to fit. Originally was nickel but I went with chrome for upkeep reasons. Anyway it was more than a few thousands.
