Default How to remove the axle housing

Been putting this project off a long time, I would like to safely remove the axel housing on the right side so the housing race can be repaired. What would be the right and safe way of removing the housing. Does the rear spring have to be removed on both sides or the side that has to be removed. thanks

The rear spring shackles only need to be removed on the side that you're working on. You can use a spring spreader or 2 pieces of 2X4 6 or 8 inches long and the weight of the car to spread the spring to get the shackles apart.
I just worked on the rear end of our CCPU and had to put about 600 lbs of ballast in the box to give it enough weight to spread the spring.

Consider doing both sides. After removing the driver's side, just unbolt the ten screws on the passenger side and remove the right side bell. Then everything (almost) is revealed so you can then do a complete restoration.

Chances are if the race is bad the bearing too is bad, not sure how you would know that the race is bad without a total tear down. Once you replace those then how are you going to set the preload? Sounds to me you are trying to do a band-aid repair with a blindfold on. Do it once and do it right the first time.

This is how the housing race looks like and why it has to be turned down and a new race fitted on.

Don't the vendors sell a kit that is a new race and bearing for this repair and it can be done on the car? Essentially you use the later model V8 bearing and a sleeve goes over your damaged bearing surface.

No, the housing has to be removed and set into a lathe...then the worn hub is cut down to fit the new race.....the axle housing needs to be about 1-1/2 thousands larger than the ID of this sleeve for a good press fit.
