Should I Use Water or Antifreeze Coolant?
Just in case you are on the fence as to using plain water, maybe this picture will help you decide.
Nothing like plain water to destroy a nice engine block and head. Rusty water also destroys water pump seals and bearings/bushings. |

Re: Should I Use Water or Antifreeze Coolant?
The only time I would use plain water is to check for leaks. When no leaks are found, Then drain & replace with 50/50 antifreeze.

water is thicker then antifreeze, so leaks are more readily detected with antifreeze. at least that's what Ive found................ |

This year is going to be the first time I'll be leaving my model a in a nonheated garage. The winters here can 0-20 below I figure I ask you cuz being from Alaska you see much colder temperatures. Things like this happens when we love our hobby and we begin to collect more than one car.

Actually it's from a 1948 Studebaker Champion, and it's being turned into a cutaway engine.

Re: Should I Use Water or Antifreeze Coolant?
I have an idea that's what the rear of my block looked like in the spare temporary engine I installed in my 28. Even after several flushings and the 30 day vinegar treatment I'm still filtering out bits of rust. I made a cone shaped filter out of bug screen and folded a lip in the large end to catch the rust chunks. I'll take a picture of it the next time I remove it for cleaning.

Re: Should I Use Water or Antifreeze Coolant?
Hi Tom,
Nothing like actual experience vs. reading what others recommend. Thanks for this engine photo which demonstrates the true results of past Model A Forum recommendations for using plain water for coolant. As one can witness, over time, plain water for coolant is an excellent way to attack a cast iron cooling system which eventually leads to major clogged radiator problems, overheating, and increased engine wear. Many will continue to use plain water for coolant ....... but, like continued tobacco use & cigarette use ....... it just takes quiet a bit more time for a modern day informed idiot to cultivate his own full blown lung cancer. |

Re: Should I Use Water or Antifreeze Coolant?
I would say that it is kind of hard to determine what any combination of water, antifreeze or etc. has on your engine block unless you can examine the inside walls.....
