Well ... The hotter an engine runs the more efficient it is ( up to the point it boils)
The hotter it runs the less byproducts of combustion -ie less sludging of the oil and components. The biggest wear on your engine occurs during warm up when lubricants are cold and not as efficient . Thermostats speed up the warm up process resulting in less wear. Thermostats have been used in every new vehicle since the thirties . I don't know but logic would assume that the entire atuomobile production industry knows more than I do -I use stats -Karl
